I am a Diploma RN with 37 yrs of experience. I have been out of the hands-on clinical setting for 5 yrs and have been working in Medical Management for Managed Care Organizations and Clinical Review. After 5 years and some time off to try and heal after the loss of my son, I have come to the realization that I need my passion back. I am not a desk nurse and I have been missing out on direct patient care all this time. I have realized that the path I chose after leaving the hospital was not what I wanted at all.
Now in my search to to go back to direct patient care, the problem is that my most recent clinical experience was 5 years ago. I have contacted the SC board for recommendations on refreshers but those options were for nurses with lapsed licenses. I have maintained mine. I researched universities for something but they don't really offer a "refresher-type" course. They only offered a strictly Phlebotomist course or IV course. Even then, it was mainly for new grads or people still in school and the courses had all these requirements such as transcripts, etc. I looked at various CEU courses I could take. I am literally at my wits end. Right now, I merely want to get back to total patient care. Anyone else had this experience? Suggestions?

With so much experience, I wouldn't think you would need one. The fine details may have changed, but the basics have not.
I agree and I was still using my nursing knowledge doing prior authorizations and admission/concurrent reviews on hospital stays. There is some ageism I've noticed in many situations. Thank you for your input.
