I have no medical background, and Im very new to the medical field. My goal is to become an RN.
1) I want to know how long would it take for me to become an RN once i get in the RN program?
2) Or Is it better to become an LVN first then transfer to RN?
What would the time frame look like for both?

If you want an associates degree program it should take about two years, give or take. If you want a bachelor's program, it should take about four years, give or take.
There is actually so much involved in all of this that it is hard to give advice with no context. For example, I foolishly applied for only one nursing program in 2005 and didn't get in. There is a whole year down the ol' toilet because I couldn't apply again until fall of 06. So for me the path from 0 - RN was 5 years and that is with an accelerated program. But I was working full time and taking one pre-req class at a time. Everyone is different and your end goals have a lot to do with how long the process will take.
Ive been told to take the LVN program first which is a 12 month course. After doing that and having all my pre req's, what do i need to do in order to go take the RN exam?

To be eligible to take NCLEX-RN, you'll need to graduate from an accredited school of nursing (RN program) and meet your state's requirements for licensure.
Whether or not you choose to initially enroll in an LVN program, graduate, take (and presumably pass NCLEX-PN) and work as an LVN is up to you.
