RN to Coder

Updated:   Published

I'm an RN and and would like to know if there's a way to gain training to become a biller/coder (and later auditor) without the lengthy and expensive AAPC program courses? Does the RN license count towards any part of a program?

I am an LPN, that self studied and got my CPC. Now I teach others in preparation to sit for their CPC exam.

I personally do not recommend a medical billing and coding school unless u plan to sit for a medical billing and coding certification., which is NOT the same as a medical coding CPC certification. If you do not want to go through AAPC course, u can self study as well.

DM me for details

Wishing u all the best

Side note: UHG has roles from time to time that hires nurses in roles that are open to those with medical coding certifications as well.

Specializes in Vents, Telemetry, Home Care, Home infusion.

RN basic education does not include  billing/coding instruction.

Many community colleges offer this training under their community education and career training programs

Philadelphia CC Medical Billing and Coding Program

Delaware County Medical Billing and Coding Program

Certification exams included in program.

Thanks a lot for this information, NRSKarenRN, BSN, RN.

Thank you for the information, shonna554. Did you have previous experience with coding? If not, were you able to obtain employment with higher wages? Lastly, do you have a site, information,  etc. for ppl in your teaching?

Thanks,

Sandy

Hi Sandy,

No prior experience with coding. I do get a high wage.

I choose roles that require a coding certification but I am not coding. These roles are more laid back.

Rolee like:

  • Clinical Appeals
  • SIU (Fraud, Waste and Abuse)
  • Medical or Reimbursent policy creation
  • Claim edits
