Residency programs in Seattle area

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Hi, I am graduating in December from a school in California and am planning on moving to the Seattle/Tacoma area post-graduation. I would like to start in a residency program for critical care if possible.

Unfortunately it's hard to find a lot of information on residency programs that are available and what kind of requirements they have. I was hoping someone might have some advice or insight into what it takes to get in and how the process works, as well as any general tips on moving states and finding a job as a new grad in general. Is there anything I can start working on now?

Any advice is welcome and appreciated. Thank you!

I would suggest definitely looking into some of these programs earlier rather than later. I just graduated this May, and some of my classmates started applying to jobs as early as October and November. A lot of New Grad residency programs require a full application, 3 reference letters, and essays as well so it takes some time to complete them. You can try calling some of the hospitals to see when the applications are posted and get more information or be directed to their websites. These programs can be very competitive and sometimes the applications are only open for a few days!

Seattle Children's and UW Medical have residency programs but I've heard they like to hire internally. Don't let that stop you though - I'd call and find out when the applications go up and what they require.

Start gather information earlier rather than later. Evergreen, Harborview-UW Medicine, Northwest Hospital, Overlake, Seattle Children's, Swedish, and Virginia Mason all offer residency programs. All with differing criteria and deadlines. I think Swedish is the best publicized and it and Harborview/UWMC are the more competitive programs. Evergreen and Overlake are on the eastern side of the lake rather than in Seattle proper. Further south Multicare in Auburn, and Franciscan Health Systems in Tacoma also offer residencies.
