Request info from SC flight nurses

Hey. I am a RN with two years CCU ( not true CCU- more like ICU) experience. I would like to eventually become a flight nurse. What steps should I take to ensure this position? What facilities offer the best training? I am new to this area- just moved from MS 1 month ago. I currently live in the upstate/ Clemson area. I do not want a long commute to work, so info specific to this area will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for any replies!!

Get as many certifications as you can. Experience working in a Level I trauma

center is also a big help. You will need at least ACLS and PALS. Trauma cerifications also. Actual training will be done by the facility that hires you.

I agree with suzanne4, you should be working at a level I trauma center, either in ER or trauma ICU. If you can be in a hospital that has their own flight program it may be beneficial since programs often fill the very few positions internally first. After experience, the key is certifications. ACLS, PALS, NRP, ENPC, TNCC, PHTLS. Some states require nurses to have their EMT or EMT-P. A national cert. such as CCRN or CEN is highly recommended if not required.
