Jul 28, 2025Jul 28 Hi! Did anyone refuse the VRP if so what happened? In PA if that makes any difference
Jul 29, 2025Jul 29 What are the circumstances? I believe you can potentially face disciplinary action from the BON. Then your case would be turned over to the disciplinary monitoring unit.
Jul 31, 2025Jul 31 I have. I screwed up while in PNAP and drank some alcohol and failed one of my drug tests for it. They wanted me to get another evaluation (which I did) and recommended I complete IOP again. I did not have the money to complete that again (my insurance sucks). So I dropped out. I let it go and decided nursing just wasnt going to be my thing anymore until 2 months ago... The BON randomly reached out asking if I wanted to complete an evaluation to see where things stand? My 3 year suspension is up in Sept. So thats the only reason why I think they reached out? I agreed to the assessment and eval. The new program "NHP" had a caseworker to perform an assessment on me and she then took this assessment to the big old group at their meeting. They recommended that I complete a 2 day outpatient comprehensive evaluation and gave me 3 facilities to choose from. All being $3000 or more. I found a NHP approved evaluator who was $1500 cheaper and closer to where I live. They denied me and said I couldn't have it done there... So...here I am going down this rabbit hole once again and met with an attorney regarding this. If you refuse, prepare for your license to be suspended for "no less than 3 years" They'll make you get another evaluation again too if you petition them after 3 years. Sorry for the long post...
Jul 31, 2025Jul 31 Author I appreciate this post so much! It's so useful and informative! I wish you the best of luck! It's truly a life changing struggle
Jul 31, 2025Jul 31 Author My circumstance was a DUI. They said I was safe to practice but wanted me in the program because I have Crohn's disease and the evaluator believes you should not consume alcohol ever if you have Crohn's.
Jul 31, 2025Jul 31 What grinds my damn gears is that they are NOT your physician to be telling you that you shouldn't be drinking with Crohn's. If they feel you do not have a substance use disorder whatsoever then I would be questioning what the point is of you being in the program? I've seen many nurses who have DUIs be told they didn't have to do the program because they do not feel they have a problem. I would be fighting that til the end! Get a lawyer if they told you that.
Oct 10, 2025Oct 10 I also find it odd that they would prohibit you from drinking alcohol completely because you have Crohn's. I would recommend restrictions if there were a harmful drug interaction, but if there isn't, it really comes down to individual tolerance and self-awareness of how alcohol triggers symptoms
Oct 13, 2025Oct 13 You entered the program because you got a DUI. You are in trouble now because you drank while in the program. Once you are in the program, you can't drink regardless of whether a Doctor says you can drink or can't drink related to Crohns. A monitoring program will not allow you to drink alcohol.

Did you inform them you wouldn't be able to continue the program and they sent you all the information regarding suspension? I am in the same boat where I can't keep this up do to cost. Just trying to figure out how to go about doing it. I appreciate your input!
Jan 18Jan 18 Yes, I informed them and they seriously keep bugging me and bugging me. I had a pretty extensive surgery in November and the NHP contacted me AGAIN telling me they would let me get a less expensive evaluation done if I could pass a blood test and hair follicle. I openly told them I had surgery and what meds were prescribed. I told them I would get them all my records too. They responded with "oh, nope thats out. You wouldn't pass" What the heck?! They reached out to me again after months!! I am so frustrated. They are still sending me letters because I won't answer their calls. I just gave up.
Jan 18Jan 18 That is crazy! Did you have to go to a hearing or anything? Or did they just send you a letter in the mail saying your license was suspended because you weren't able to continue being in the VRP?
Jan 18Jan 18 I actually requested a hearing because of all the inconsistencies and that phone call. I had surgery and they are using that against me. My hearing is the 27th.--To be honest, I just want to throw in the towel. I don't even want to be a nurse anymore.
Jan 18Jan 18 I meant for when you left the VRP the first time. Did you do anything besides tell them you couldn't afford to continue the program and then get a letter about the license suspension? And I definitely don't understand their logic, especially when you can provide all proof and documentation from having the surgery! They seem desperate for you to get reinstated, but then want you to jump through unrealistic hoops to get there.
