Reference checking firm?

I am having problems finding another job and am suspecting that I am receiving a bad reference from my previous supervisor. I have done research on this topic and have found a few companies that will check a reference for you for a fee and report to you what the employer said. Has anyone used one of these services? Any suggestions??

    And if you find that he or she has given a bad reference to a prospective employer?

    As long as what is being said is true, you likely have little recourse.
