Recommendations-ER, where would you go/work?

If you could move & work in any hospital/ER in the U.S. where would you go? Are you happy where you are? I'm looking to going back to the U.S. to work. There are no jobs here in Canada. Union rules allow unqualified internal candidates to get a job in a specialty even if they have no certificates or experience, whatsoever. So, I end up on the outside with nothing. I'd like to get more education and not be in the middle of nowhere. Anyone out there with recommendations on the best places to go?

    Wow. I've tried several areas of the site & had hoped to hear from some other nurses. Haven't heard anything from anyone. Guess I shouldn't be surprised. I have had the joy of receiving from the reported scam of Global Healthcare USA. Saw the complaints at the Better Business Bureau of their investigation.

    I think you ask such a broad question, that it would be hard for people to formulate an answer. plus, I've personally had the experience of working somewhere that I loved, and having a friend come and hate it.

    I think you should pick an area of the country you want to live in and then explore from there. In addition you may want to ask in the travel nursing area, since travelers tend to be able to shed light on many many facilities.

    The job market here is tight as well. Without a National system rumors of hospitals state to state don't occur unless they wind up in the news. There are areas that are less affected by the job shortages than others.....only a job search will tell. Try browsing the US forums you may find some chatter there....we have forums for every state. I agree it might be better to decide your climate you want to live in and go from there....... What is your speciality?

    Has the Nursing Shortage Disappeared?

    It's that time of year again. Graduating nursing students are preparing to take the NCLEX and are looking for their first jobs. This year, many are finding those first jobs in short supply.

    Reports are rampant of new graduates being unable to find open positions in their specialty of choice, and even more shockingly, many are finding it tough to find any openings at all.

    These new RNs entered school with the promise that nursing is a recession-proof career. They were told the nursing shortage would guarantee them employment whenever and wherever they wanted.

    So what happened? Has the nursing shortage—that we've heard about incessantly for years—suddenly gone away?

    The short term answer is clearly yes, although in the long term, unfortunately, the shortage will still be there.

    The recession has brought a temporary reprieve to the shortage. Nurses who were close to retirement have seen their 401(k) portfolios plummet and their potential retirement income decline. They are postponing retirement a few more years until the economy—and their portfolios—pick up.

    Many nurses have seen their spouses and partners lose their jobs and have increased their hours to make ends meet for their families. Some who left the profession to care for children or for other reasons have rejoined the workforce for similar reasons.

    In addition, many hospitals are not hiring. The recession brought hiring freezes to healthcare facilities across the country, and many are still in effect. Help wanted ads for healthcare professionals dropped by 18,400 listings in July, even as the overall economy saw a modest increase of 139,200 in online job listings.

    Thanks. I'm checking out the site. Here in Canada there is a new grad initiative. They get a full-time job with benefits completely paid for by the government for the first six months. It encourages hospitals to hire new grads.So of course they get hired so the hospital saves money. Senior nurses aren't retiring because of the economy. Experienced nurses caught in between have NOTHING! I have NEVER had a full-time job here & it gives an unfair advantage. I have never had any kind of benefits, and never had a vacation. I see new grads get all the jobs. Living off my savings. How can I not be angry-no house, no car, no job. I need a new career.

    I hear what you are saying and it is not really any better here....and new grads don't get any help from the government.

    Let's hope there are better days ahead.
