Reciprocity Trouble?

Hello

I am moving from WV to VA in a few weeks and would like to know if anyone has any idea about reciprocity for this? Is there a process involved, and if so what is it? I have sent an e-mail with these same questions to this site: http://www.dhp.state.va.us/nursing/ although I'm not entirely sure they will be speedy with their response.. has anyone ever had trouble with reciprocity? Thanks for any input. I was also looking at other posts about this and I noticed that as long as the states have the compact that you may move w/in them as long as you pay fees etc.. or so i gathered.. but WV is not part of the compact, however the state I'm moving to is.. what does this mean for me? - Edit - It appears that because WV does not participate in mutual recognition I will have to use Nursys Verification.

Go to the State of Virginia BON website. Click on forms on the left side of the page, then select LVN/LPN. They give you instruction and an application to print out. I don't live there but I read part of the process. Give them a call if you're still uncertain.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR LICENSURE BY ENDORSEMENT - LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSE

APPLICATION FORM - Complete the application form and return it with the required fee to the Board office if you will be practicing nursing in Virginia. Complete the affidavit on page 3 and have it notarized by a notary public.

VIRGINIA – COMPACT STATE – Virginia began participating in the Nurse Licensure Compact on January 1, 2005. If you live in a non-compact state and would like a Virginia license, you need to submit an application for licensure by endorsement. If Virginia will become your primary state of residence, you will need to obtain a Virginia license. If your license is unrestricted in your prior home state, you will be granted a “multi-state privilege” which will allow you to practice in other compact states. If you now live in a compact state and are moving to Virginia, you may continue to practice under your former home state license and multi-state privilege during the processing of your application for a period not to exceed thirty (30) days. For a current list of states in the Compact, go to https://www.ncsbn.org/158.htm. Once you are issued a Virginia license, you must destroy your previous compact state license and notify your previous compact state that Virginia is now your primary state of residence. “Primary state of residence” is defined by the Compact as “the state of a person’s declared fixed permanent and principal home or domicile for legal purposes”. Evidence of a primary state of residence may be required.

NOTE: A licensure application shall be held in abeyance in accordance with the compact regulations when a license is under investigation in another compact state.

LICENSE VERIFICATION FORM - Complete only the top portion of the license verification form and send it to the board of nursing where you were originally licensed by examination along with the appropriate fee. If your original state of licensure is participating in the Nurse Licensure Compact, please send the Nursys verification form to Nursys along with the $30 fee. (If original state of licensure is Illinois, Connecticut or Hawaii, an original transcript must be mailed to this office directly from the school.) You are responsible for any fee your original board may require to complete the form. Delays may be avoided by inquiring about these fees in advance. Your original board will send the form to this office. License verification forms received in this office prior to receipt of the application will be retained on file for no longer than 90 days. If the application is not received within this time, you must request another form to be completed and sent to this office.

Rereading this again it sounds like you need to: If you live in a non-compact state (WV) and would like a Virginia license, you need to submit an application for licensure by endorsement. If Virginia will become your primary state of residence, you will need to obtain a Virginia license.

Then I believe you will be issued a VA license which will allow you to practice in other compact states.

And just to clear this up for others that are reading:

Licenses do not have reciprocity, only the NCLEX exam. You need to endorse a license, there is not even an application for reciprocity, only for initial licensure and endorsement.

If you are moving out of the home state, then the Compact License becomes null and void, it is only valid if you maintain a residence in the home state.

Your licnese will be valid in the original state only, and you will need to apply for License by Endorsement to get a license in the new state. Just follow the instructions for that.
