Quick Question: Job offer during interview or called later

Published

If you are currently working and you can remember, were you offered your job at the end of your interview or were you called later? If so how many days after the interview did you get the call? Just trying to figure out what is most common. Thanks =)

For that first job, I got the offer about two weeks after the interview--they did the background check, drug screen and employment verification first.

For the second job, I received the offer later on the same day as the interview.

For the third job, I was recruited, so I essentially had the job offer before the interview.

As for what is common...who knows? There's too many variables in there: facility preference, interviewer ability to make offers, the job type, the applicant themselves...

First nursing job...took about 2 weeks for the official offer. In hospitals, most of the offers come from HR, not the manager directly. I had an indication he was interested but still nervous about it until I got the official word.

Second nursing job, HR called me as I was driving out of the parking lot!! Didn't have any clue I would be offered the job. I thought the interview wasn't the greatest because it was for a specialty I had never worked before. I clicked with the panel, but it was more of a personal conversation since they had no clue what to ask me.

Third, it took about 3 days.

Fourth, about 2 weeks but there was a holiday in there and the manager let me know she wanted to hire me after about one week but it HAD to go through HR first. HR had limited hours due to the holiday and better things to do than call me. :)

GOOD LUCK

I have a question. I got a call last Friday from the person who interviewed me and offered me the job but she said the background check hasn't come back and I should get an official offer this week. It's Wednesday and I am a little inpatient. Should I call her or wait until Friday?

I've been in nursing almost 30 years, too many jobs to count at this point, and I have never gotten a job offer at the end of an interview. I would be worried if I did (something squirrelly about that employer). There are too many variables; other candidates to be considered, background checks to be done, etc. I've left plenty of interviews with v. positive feelings about my chances :), but the formal offer has always come later. How long it's taken to get the formal offer varies greatly among employers; sometimes, it's been within a few days, other times, it's taken weeks or even months.
