Quick -- where can I live in Phoenix?

Published

i have agreed to work at the maricopa county detention center for 13 weeks. :uhoh3: can anyone direct me to safe, relatively clean housing that is not more than a half hour commute from the durango complex? i don't care about fancy or trendy --- just as gang-free as possible and still close-ish to work. thank you so much![/font]

Sorry, but I'm not familiar with the area.

There should be some apartments that cater to shorter stays. Might be good to do a search for an apartment locator service.

Thirteen weeks may limit your options for a lease. Have you considered staying in a Residence Inn? I commuted up to Phx Monday mornings for the work week and checked out on Fridays. I did that for a few months when I moved to Phx a few years back. They had reasonable weekly rates (~$250) for business folks. It'll be more expensive if you stay all 7 days of the week, but it's something else to consider.

What are the cross streets for that place, do you know? Then I might be able to be of more help if I know what area you are talking about.

The addresses for the Maricopa County Jails are:

3225 W. Durango

102 W. Madison St.

3127 W. Gibson Lane

It seems to be south of the 10 where 17 curves and turns into the 60, if I am remembering the numbers of the highways right.

I will check into an extended stay, but I am coming from the East Coast -- not really an option to go home on weekends. I have seen a few places where I can get a three month lease, but I don't have any sense of where anything is over there. I lived in Mesa, for a short time, but that doesn't help me now.

Thanks for answering so promptly.

ok, yea, that is not a good area so you will definitely need to find something away from there.

you say you want 1/2 hr commute, but I'm not sure what your work hours are going to be. depending on where you stay the commute could be longer because of traffic. Now, there is a lot of new build stuff, apartments and homes south of there, you have to drive through really poor areas with factories and ghettos, but over by south mountain there is a lot of new stuff, golf courses etc, and it's not far away at all.

You could stay in avondale, which is a nice new area (i am out here on the west side), lots of apartments and new homes and businesses, your commute would probably be 1/2 an hr. but if you work at like 8am, then there is a lot of traffic going east on the 10.

East of that jail would be chandler and tempe which are also nice areas. you could get an apt right of the 10 in tempe and have about a 1/2 hour commute there. I'd say tempe would be the best area, you'd probably be able to find something short term. When we first moved to az we stayed in an apt for 3 months and they added $50 onto our rent since we didn't sign a lease and it was just month-to-month.

You could also call a realtor that could help you out with some rentals.

HTH I'll try and answer more questions if you have them.

i think avondale might be a good place. traffic isn't that horribly bad depending on time of day. above is a map from avondale to durango jail (if that durango address is correct).

2 extended stay hotels. not sure if you want apt or hotel. anyway, the first one is better area, second is right off freeway, new, not too bad of area. i live a little north and it gets bad before it gets better, but still not too bad. i wouldn't be afraid to stay there. not too far from durango either, probably 10 miles.

good luck!
