Questioning myself

Published

Hi everyone!

Im new to this forum. Love reading your posts. I am new to the ED. I have been in the ED for about 8 months now. Before that I was a tele nurse for 3 years. It had always been my dream to work in emergency nursing. I feel confident in my skills and I know I am good at what I do but since starting in the ED I feel like a brand new nurse. I'm asking a million questions, half of them seem ridiculous for am experienced nurse to be asking. Tonight I had a code at the end of my shift and it made me question what I'm doing. I felt so disorganized. I still get nervous and feel frazzled inside when codes come in. What can I do to help? Maybe tonight was just one of those bad nights.

I get the same feelings! I know this doesn't help :( but know your not going through it alone. I've been a medical/tele nurse for 2 years and switched to the ED back in oct 2013. I still feel so new! Sometimes like I just graduated :/ I hate that feeling!

What I find helpful is courses I have signed up for through work. Even renewing my BCLS, I feel a little but more confident during codes (somewhat lol). PALS is also extremely helpful.

Just keep doing what ur doing. If you didn't feel nervous then I would think that is a little strange. Always ask questions. Even if they are dumb ones.

The more experience in codes you get, the less you will feel nervous. I can't even count how many codes I've participated in, but sometimes I still get the shakes! After a code, review what happened and where improvements could have been made, if any. Go back to your ACLS and just follow the algorithm. Soon, you'll have more confidence! I know, I was in your shoes not too long ago!

Also, I second all the posters above... Never stop asking questions!

Thank you everyone!!!
