Question

Thank you to everyone who gave me feed back on my interest in Nursing. I am looking into some programs now. Hopefully I CAN START in Jan. 2008. The questions that I have are:

  • What are the chances of me getting into a program in Jan 2008?
  • I hear some discouraging post about getting a Job as a Nurse in Boston.

Have you already applied to nursing programs? Many of the community college ADN programs have waiting lists - plus most require that you complete certain pre-requisite classes before you can start the nursing program. January 2008 is only a couple months away so unless you have already started the process I'm not sure how likely it is that you will be able to start in January. I got lucky because I was on a waitlist and someone dropped out so I started sooner than I expected. But I did have classmates who had to wait over a year to get into the program. I would suggest that you contact the schools you are interested in and ask them if there is a waitlist and if you can start in January.

As for the job situation in Boston. I had a difficult time finding a job in a hospital. There are just not enough new grad positions out there to support all the new nurses. Lots of open jobs in rehab, skilled nursing, etc. if that is something you are interested in. Also - many people suggest working as a PCA during school to make connections and have an "in" at a hospital once you graduate. If you can do that it would probably help a lot.

Good luck!

Thank You for your reply.

can you say 5 YEARS for an ASN. That is how long it took me to be able to say that I am a nurse. One year pre-req, 2 1/2 yr on the wait list and 2 years for the actual nursing program. Was it worth it yea!!! If I would do it all over again I would do the pre-req's and get on the list and while you are waiting get more stuff done for you BSN , shave some time off of that at least. GOOD LUCK!!

Why so long?

5 years for an ASN program. What school did you attend? Should I try getting into a BSN program?

this is in rhode island. They do not tell you before you start and you wait..... and wait..... and wait..... then yu realize you should have gone for your BSN from the start and then they call you to tell you are in the program..... no more wait list now..... only merit based

Why the wait? I would think that the BSN program would have a longer waiting period!
