Question about RNs in the armed services

Published

I was recently at a job fair at school and the Army was there. I looked over some of the benefits they offer for new grads and it seems like a really good deal. Does anybody have any advice for new grads who are considering the armed services right out of school? I have an interest in OR nursing which they offer. thanks

Hey there, e-dice. I am currently a new new RN ( I have 1 yr prior exp as an LPN) and I am currently in the USAF. There are a a lot of great benefits (medical, further education, etc). I have enjoyed it so far. check out the military nursing forum, there are a lot of questions and responses from different people on the subject of nursing in the military. Be aware, commonly new nurses going into the military start our working on a general med-surg floor for a time before moving on to other specialties (ICU, ER, OR, Etc.) If you have prior experience in an area there are opportunities to jump into that specialty. There are great incentives to military nursing and I would advise anyone to at least look into it. like I said though, check out the military nursing forum, you'll probably find others that have responded to questions similar to your own.

THanks NIB. I didn't know there was a military nursing forum, i'll have to check it out.
