question about general classes

I have been seeing a few post about people saying that you had to have approval from excelsior to take a clep/dsst exam and get credit for it. I know basically what classes I need I have never taken sociology, psychology, micro, life span etc. I had planned on testing out of them via clep or Uexcel. I don't want to apply to the school until I have these to save money. But it sounds like excelsior might not accept these if I do these prior to enrolling. That seems weird to me. What if I have already taken them, does that mean they might not except them?

You run the risk of wasting your time and money, but it is a calculated risk. EC will occasionally change what they will and won't accept for credit.

Thank you for the response. That makes sense, I could be wasting money on classes that I might have to retake.
