Question about Board exam

Published

I am an immigrant in the US and will study nursing in the philippines,

I was wondering if i have to take the Board here (p.i.) or can i just take the State board in CA after i graduate?

CA is now requiring the local license. One is only exempt from it if they are a US citizen and do not hold dual citizenship. If you hold a green card, it means that you are still a citizen of the Philippines.

They have made some exemptions in the past, but we are not seeing it any longer and are actually requiring a letter from the PRC that one is actually exempt from it.

Requirements are also getting tighter in CA as well, expect them not to waive this requirement for anyone in the near future.

Also make sure that your program is accepted by CA for licensure; not all of them in PI are accepted.

Moving this thread to the International Forum since it is specific to working in the US.

Also be aware that it is going to be four to six months before you will be given permission to sit for the NCLEX as well. And if they are requiring the local license, that is going to need to be passed and a license in hand before they will permit one to sit for the NCLEX exam here.

Next please be aware that there are now many new grads that completed school last summer in CA that are still without work; it is going to be much harder for you to get hired by a hospital if you have trained out of the US. Just wanted you to be aware of this. And we are frequently seeing new grad programs where the nurse got hired, get cancelled before they have even started.

Would also recommend to you that you have a good read on the CA forum to see what is happening in terms of jobs here.

Best of luck to you.

thanks for your reply.

one more thing, is there a website where i can check if the nursing program i am in is accepted by CA for licensure?

Since it is not in CA, suggest that you check with the BRN directly. There is no other way to do it.
