Do nursing schools make you get bloodwork done prior to full admission? i'm just wondering b/c out of the three community colleges, i'm only seeing it mentioned for one, yet the rest of the admission requirements are pretty much the same... has anyone had to have bloodwork done prior to being admitted to nursing school? if so, what were they testing for? i assume anything that could be transmitted to a patient, right?

A blood test is not required for my community college however you have to be current on your immunizations and I am not sure if I have the documentation to prove that, even though I am pretty sure I am caught up, so maybe the blood work is to screen for immunity?

I had to do a drug test. I also had to be up to date on all immunizations.

I didn't have to have any blood work done. Just needed to be current on all my immunizations, get the skin test for TB, and provide documentation on everything. lol The only blood work my Dr. did was to get titers for prior immunizations (Hep B, Varicella, MMR)... and this was just because I had those shots (or chickenpox in 1st grade) previously and I wanted to prove I was still immune.. my nurs program accepted titers, so no need to get everything again. Although I will say, that the titers were pretty expensive. Drug test wasn't required before the program started, but they sprung a random one on us mid-semester.
What immunizations are you actually required to have?
And how much did you pay for the titers, if you don't mind me asking?

Of course, all my paperwork is filed away so I don't have the exact info, but I think I remember everything. Your future school/program may be different with their requirements though.
It was required that I had the MMR vaccine, as well as Varicella (I got titers drawn on all of these and HepB, since I had all prev). Also, you may need the Tdap vaccine (diptheria, pertussis, tetorifice). They recommend a booster of this every 10 yrs, I believe. The only tetorifice shot I ever received was when I was really young, so I had to get a booster.
Hepatitis B was a little different though.. it wasn't required that we were immunized against it/provide titers, but 100% recommended. If you opted to not get the Hep B vaccine, you had to sign a waiver with the school stating that you were aware of the risks & consequences of possibly contracting it. Let's see... also, the 2 step Mantoux TB skin test.
The titers, I think they did 4 or 5 of them, ended up being a lil over $400 all together. I don't know if that is a good/bad price.. I just know it's expensive for me! lol. My health insurance covered some of it though, so I paid maybe half out of pocket. I had everything, physical/blood work, etc done at a walk-in med clinic.. don't know if your fam. physician or health dept. might be cheaper! Hope that helps a little, if you have any other quetions, just ask!
Thanks.
I have my immunization record from when I was little but it all seems so long ago..lol And of course I never had Varicella...but I did have Chicken Pox but I guess I need a titer for that to prove immunity. Nothing about Hep A? That was required for when I worked in child care, we needed a heath card and all the Hep A immunization so I do have a little card that says I need no more Hep A..lol $400 is a lot for me too! haha, hopefully I won't have to pay that much :)
