Is there any chance of a new grad becoming part-time after their orientation period? I know it probably depends on the unit, but does anyone know in general? I am in NC and I graduate in May.
I am currently doing a summer externship in an critical care area, but they only do FT as far as I know. I have a young son and would like to have another after I graduate. Also, what are the chances of doing weekend nights as a new grad after orientation?
I would like a mommy-friendly schedule (either weekend nights or 3 8's, etc), but I feel that as a newbie, I really won't have much say for awhile. I do 3 12's now, and although I love the 4 days off, the 12 hours still are very hard with small children.
Thanks for any insight!

I will be PT at my new job. I will train PT, but work maybe another 8 Hr shift during that orientation time, then go to 2 - 12's after about 6 weeks. I wanted PT until my youngest gets into school full time. I had the chance for a part time job where I'd work 3 8's, but it was afternoons and my husband works that shift. Personally, I'd rather the 12 hour shifts to have more days off during the week.

That would be up to your unit manager. Most places would like for new grads to start working full-time for the experience. Just ask your manager to see if it would be ok to switch to part-time.
