Proper handover

Nurses General Nursing

Hi, I have recently graduated and am now an Medication endorsed Enrolled nurse, ( same as an LPN in Canada or America )

I work night shift and in my new role have the responsibility or giving handover in the morning and of course giving medications at night as required.

I was wondering if I could get some opinions as to what you experienced hands would expect or even consider a proper handover?

In my mind I want to keep it as factual as possible and of course as time effective as possible. I work in aged care so it doesnt get to exciting but yet I want to make sure I cover my bases.

As well I think there is more I should be doing on night shift, it is a new place so I know in time I will get to know the residents but what are some of the things you would do to make it easier for the next shift nurse?

Thanks for reading

Congratulations on making it to Medication endorsed Enrolled nurse. We had a checklist on the night shift. Extras were filling out the forms for discontinued meds, making sure trash cans in rooms are empty and water pitchers are full. Of coursem change-over is coming up. In my area, this is traditionally third shift's responsibility.

Good luck on your new job!

Congrats on your achievement. Changeover, or Report as it is called in these woods, best consists of brief mentions of any unusual events from your shift and the preceeding one, changes in level of function or condition, any PRNs you gave, and reminders of NPOs, pending tests and appointments.
