I love reading stories from the trenches - written by experienced RNs - sad, funny, silly, heartbreaking - but all reflections of life from the great RNs who have been there, done that. There are numerous threads devoted to nursing humor, which I love reading, but I thought perhaps it might be nice to hear some war stories - specifically from OR RNs - reflecting on your career - stories that stand out for you as an OR RN? Are there things that say to you - you know you are an OR nurse when....(fill in the blank...) Are there stories of human kindness, where you, as an OR nurse, were able to connect with your patient in a way that helped them through the often overwhelming and frightening experience of undergoing surgery? Funny or tear-inducing, just wanted to know your stories...

Hello OR Nurses! I am a med-surg RN with two years experience on the floors, and about to start a periop 101 program. I realize it is a completely different world of nursing, and I am really excited to have the opportunity to become a periop RN. However, I am a little nervous about beginning the program, and have been told that there is a lot to learn and a steep learning curve. Can anyone give me any advice about how to approach this new area of nursing? Any tips on how to prepare myself for this? Any recommended readings or books I could look at to give myself a head start? I want to be the best I can be in the course, and any advice from experienced OR RNs, or perhaps RNs who have recently completed the AORN periop 101 course, or who have trained RNs new to the OR, would be greatly appreciated!
