Thanks for the clarification. In a policy referring to patient identification: "emergency identification bands (eg Fenwal #)"
  2. anm posted a topic in General Nursing
Can anyone clarify what a Fenwal number is?
  3. Hey all, Theoretical question about best sites for BP measurements. Situation: Arm 1: Contraindicated due to fistula, mastectomy or stroke Arm 2: IV What is your practice for taking BP? Would you choose a lower extremity site first? Use a site on IV arm below/above IV? Would you do anything differently if the IV is either running or saline locked? Looking for tips, tricks, stories. Thank you!

I agree 100% with boywithacoin's post. I have lived in the bay area for almost 3 years and went to nursing school in San Francisco. Financial realities have a major influence on lifestyle. They pay, even for starting nurses, is awesome. ~60s per hour depending on the hospital, unit, and shift. That being said, it's also an expensive place to live. I personally ended up not having luck in the bay area and took a job in Oregon. I think it's important to note for my situation that I did not have CNA or direct pt care experience outside of nursing school, which I have seen usually (not always) helps people land jobs after graduation. As boywithacoin said, most of the students I know who were hired into hospitals in the area also had some sort of experience with that hospital whether through a clinical rotation, employment, or volunteer work. The only interview I was invited to in the area was at the hospital where I did my med/surg rotations. All that being said, it's certainly not impossible for you to land an awesome job at a great institution. I think you should begin networking and working on application materials tailored to each hospital you're considering now. It really is that competitive, and being from out of the area/out of state, you'll want to stand out in a relevant way. Market yourself and make sure you highlight what is going to make you an awesome nurse! A few specific pieces of info: 1) Santa Clara Valley Medical Center is cool and in my opinion looks like a great place to work. From what I've gathered, the best way in for a brand new grad here is to apply to their "extra help" positions. This may not be 100% accurate, but I believe they tend to hire into their new grad program most often from this group of people. 2) check out the Facebook groups RNInterview Tools & New Grad RN California. Info on these pages (though RNInterview Tools especially) really helped me a lot in my process. If it's helpful to know, my plan as of now is to get my out of state experience for 2+ years and come back if I really think the pay and working environments will be worth it. Best of luck to you! Hope this helps ?
  5. awesome tips everyone. thank you so much for taking the time to pass some wisdom along! very appreciated ?
  6. Hello! There have been many very helpful posts on this topic, but I am curious if anyone has pointers specific to a new grad RN on a general medical floor. I'll be starting this job soon and am hoping to succeed as much as I possibly can. FYI I'm on 12-hour day shifts with 8+ weeks of preceptor-based training. Looking for self-care tips, prioritization, time management, general advice...pretty much anything you felt was instrumental to making it when you first started working. Thank you!
  7. Potentially! I’m not very familiar with Klamath Falls and haven’t visited the area yet (I’m currently living in the Bay Area in CA). Congrats on the job btw! Aside from the hospital, how do you like Klamath/are you living there?
  8. great, thank you!
  9. Hi all, I am a new grad from the Bay Area in California. This is not news to anyone, but getting a job there as a new grad is pretty competitive, much as it is throughout the country in general. I am considering relocating to Oregon, but I'd like some input on a couple matters. 1) In the context of having some hefty school debt, how has the overall pay treated you? Considering wages to cost of living balance. 2) What's your experience with the nursing culture, patient ratios, overtime, etc? 3) How's Oregon life? Culture, activities, weather. As of now, I'm most strongly considering the southern half of the state, mostly due to the weather. I look forward to hearing back from anyone with opinions! Thank you!
  10. Hello, I am looking for any input on Sky Lakes Medical Center in Klamath Falls, OR. Experience & culture at the institution or in Klamath generally. Really anything. Thank you!
  11. This is an old post, so hopeful that one of you may see & reply to this! I plan on applying for Davis's next new grad cycle coming up in November. I was curious at what point references/letters of rec are required. Is it a part of the initial application submission? hard to tell from their website. Thanks!
  12. Hello everyone! I've recently passed NCLEX and will be graduating from nursing school in December (entry MSN). An exciting time! In the process of getting my resume ready as well as generally preparing myself for being a real nurse sometime soon, I am trying to prudently select professional organizations to join. Seems the ANA membership is a contentious topic on here. I understand where most concerns seem to be coming from (little action, misrepresentation), but I also like the idea of belonging to a recognized national organization, especially as a newbie. I'm licensed in CA and really considering ANA and/or California Nurses Assoc/NNOC. What are your thoughts? Both? CNA/NNOC? Other suggestions?* *not sure which setting ill be starting out in
  13. @sromero12 I may be interested in your offer! What would be the best way to get in touch with you?
  14. @aks92 I never ever use mine might as well have deactivated it lol but I just created a closed group. You shouldddd be able to find it if you search "USF Non-Nurse MSN Cohort 23". Honestly not sure if I made it right, but hopefully it works!
  15. And @aks92 and @md21887, I can't remember if either of you had already mentioned this before, but how are you tackling the housing situation? Would it be beneficial for us to make a Facebook group or something similar? assuming you guys have accounts :)
