  1. I agree with you natania, I do believe that practices put forth, such as infection control come from evidence based practice and outcomes in the scientific field and from the medical scientists. One thing I find amazing is that jean watson and some others have a phd or doctorate in Nursing, and some of them have become nurse practitioners along the way. Now they swear up and down that they are practicing nursing, hence they are governed by the nursing boards, which very from state to state. while PA's are governed by the medical boards. now how is diagnosing patients, ordering tests, interpreting lab values, writing H and P's and prescribing medicine anywhere near practicing nursing. I just do not understand that one. PA's practice medicine, while NP's pracice nursing, but yet they can get the same exact education at UC davis and they work side by side in the ER's diagnosing, ordering and writing RX's. but back to Nurse theorists, I just think they are trying to bring order and meaning to a chaotic profession that is so widespread that you can not some up what nursing is or should be in a 1,000 page text book.
  2. I agree with some of what alot of people are saying, and I'm am not trying to strike up an arguement. I just feel that they are just putting words into something that we arlready do. The nursing process has been around for 100 years and I do not think that orleander thought of it, she just coined the term. I do not see them fighting for more rights or making more autonomy for anyone, I just see them writing thier thoughts down and coining new terms and phrases. I think nursing already has plenty of meaning and I do not think we need these people to create theory's to follow or respect. I seem to respect everyone's opinion and do believe that these theorists are very educated and well respected people, I guess I'm just playing devil's advocate and asking why and what, cause I don't see an obvious change with them around, plus their are hundreds of them and only twenty popular ones. What has any of the theorists done that is cut and dry, something that we put into practice at the bedside, or something that is evidence based and has made a real difference. the nursing process has been around for years, caring moments have been around for thousands of years. Promoting independence with dignity and privacy, while changing the environment has been around way before any of these people. so who cares about them and why..????
  3. autonomy, well nurse theorists rarley conduct studies or prove points with evidence based practice. alot of the theorists, like jean watson, just make up touchy feely words that do not exist and try to prove to fellow nurses that what we do as nurses is way more of a transpersonal moment, or a spiritual connection. I just don't see what exactly the theorists have done for the profession. they do not fight for rights. most of them are more interested in describing what nurses are and what they do to whoever will listen.....
  4. who really cares?????
  5. hello ok lets be real, who cares about nurse theorists and why are they important to study in school, or follow to make nursing a profession and not an occupation. do you really think if we found fifty new nurse theorists to write down thier motos and ideas, it would make nursing a viable career option.?? do you think they are really needed or even listened to or followed within healthcare. think about jean watson or betty neuman, if they are so important, can each of you name five things that they have actually done, by themselves to promote nursing and make it what it is today???? Nursing is a subjective field and it means something different to each and every nurse, the main goal of course is to take care of sick people and promote health to all mankind. so if all of the popular doctorate prepared nurse theorists all say something different, than it is clear to me that they are just expressing thier ideas and thoughts on nursing for others to follow. we all know that opinions are only worth what you pay for them, and I'm sure some of them enjoy the kindness all of the book deals and movie deals and nursing magazines have brought them. I JUST DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY ANYONE CARES ABOUT THIER OPINIONS AND WHY THEY ARE TRULY NEEDED WITHIN OUR PROFESSION. Arn't my thoughts and opinions on nursing just as right and important.
  6. DEAR all, I don't know where to begin, but I don't know why anyone cares about nurse theorists or thier ideas on what nursing is or how one should act. can someone please tell me the importance of studying a nurse theorist or a group of them. I do not think they are needed within the profession and I do not think we need to copy thier ideas to become a profession or patend any of their ideas to aline with our mission statement within hospitals. maybe this is just a guy thing, I don't know.

Are the rules and standards really that different. I mean prisoners are the only people in society that are intitled to health care. I know they are not accredited by JACHO but they do have to have some legalities in this system. Any correctional nurses around.

    legal or not??????

question for Nurses, california is the state, Is it legal for non licensed people to pass meds to minors in a juvenile detention center, after five pm and on weekends. On the thought that the juvenile gaurds are acting as parents, and so it is legal for parents to give children medication. I don't see how this is legal but it is happening. The RN does the initial assessment, and checks the meds, makes out the med sheets and then goes home at five and the guards pass the night meds and the weekend meds. Including narcotics. The narcotics are in a med cart that is NOT locked up. get that. Second problem is ....... children come to this juvenile detention center and sometimes bring their own meds. and 75 percent of them are on narcotic stimulants for their bad behavior. Then when the juvenile is released, the last thing on thier mind is to pick up their medications. So how does the county operated juvenile detention center dispose of their meds?????? well they throw the prescription bottle in the bottom drawer of the unlocked med cart and let them sit their for god knows how long. until someone decides to take them home or throw them away. How Can this be legal. So bottom line, this county juvenile hall place is letting unlicensed jail guards pass all medications including narcotics, then they literally leave the medcart unlocked because """ so many different people need to get into it and we only have one set of keys"""" Then they decide to keep all prescriptions, mostly narcotics, in the bottom of this unlocked med cart because they have no " proper way of disposing of them """" I do not see how this is illegal but please tell me your opinions. heres the good part..... this place has fired two RNs on two separate occasions, one being my friend. one RN was fired for unknown reasons, possibly med errors or missing medications. The other RN was fired for narcotics comming up missing?????? wow...
  10. i work in a county jail, 400 inmates, i work per diem with no benifits and only 8 hour shifts. the pay is 30 an hour and 33 an hour on nights. duties are easy and routine. i dont know if this is really correctional nursing or not. but i have heard many times over that if i went to a prison around here i would make a lot more and work twelve hour shifts. then i heard about an MTA job where the prison cross trains you in a correctional officer and Rn. by the way, i am an RN
