Both phases are graduate.

I'll take "generally, yes"!! I'm hoping they pretty much make their decisions before interviews and then conduct the interviews just to make sure we aren't crazy Either way, by one month from today we will have the final decisions!!

I'm thinking about emergency too! I really like that they offer sub specialties like that.
-
UAB AMNP 2017
Congrats everyone!! I've given some thought to specialties, but I don't want to decide until we start clinicals and really get a feel of what I do and don't enjoy. I'm thinking about family, adult acute, and neonatal... but we'll see!!

I just got my email! October 24!!

UAB AMNP 2017
There was speculation that they were getting hundreds this year, but when I went to an info session recently I asked. All she said is that they get "about 130 applications a year and accept about 70" and that they definitely haven't gotten hundreds. I don't know any further specifics though!

UAB AMNP 2017
I was told by the program manager that we would know something by the 12th! I emailed her about the timeline after I submitted my application and she said they would start reviewing apps the first week of October, we would know about an interview by the 12th, and interviews the week of the 24th. I'm thankful she was so transparent about it! Usually schools are like "in a couple of weeks" haha.

Wildforest, The Oaks at Lakeshore, any of the Crowne complexes, The Hill, 4700 Colonnade, 150 Summit, and Colony Woods are all good. There are tons more but that's all I can think of off the top of my head. Those are all in the Homewood and Vestavia areas.

I agree with Emily. Downtown is pretty spotty unless you want to spend a small fortune for a good place I live in Vestavia and it takes me about 10 minutes to get to UAB!

Birmingham is pretty spread out, so if you want somewhere rural you'll have to live pretty far outside the city. Maybe a 30-45 minute commute? Birmingham is a great place though! I love it here. There are several neighborhood/suburb areas that are close, safe, and really cute. Downtown, Homewood, Vestavia Hills, Mountain Brook, and Hoover are the main areas. Downtown can be a little dangerous just because it's downtown, but there are some nice apartments (usually pricey though). Homewood is my favorite personally. It's an adorable area with a lot of old, charming houses. It's fairly expensive but there are definitely some affordable options. I live in Vestavia Hills, which has The Summit aka the best shopping center ever haha. It's a really cute area with old and new houses. Hoover is kind of like Vestavia but it feels a little busier to me because all the interstates run right through the middle of it. Mountain Brook is where all the rich people live. Like, multi million dollar houses on every corner... but it's beautiful! All of the areas have great shopping, restaurants, houses, and apartments. None of them feel like you're "in the city" in my opinion. Except downtown of course. You really can't go wrong anywhere! Hope this helps!

The interview dates are October 24, 25, 27, and 28. They've said they get "about 130 applications every year and accept about 70" but no specifics have been given for this year. You probably didn't get the email because your application isn't complete. I feel sure your transcript will get there in time!!

Mrs. Lavier told me they are meeting the first week of October and that we will be notified by October 12th if we have an interview.

No idea... probably right before classes start in January?

Welcome! The classes in phase 2 are part time and online so I think you can do them at your own pace in general. And I don't see why you couldn't do your clinical out of state as long as your state allows you to work as an RN without a BSN degree. There's a PDF on the UAB AMNP page that tells you the overview and also they have info sessions every Wednesday in the nursing building at noon!

From what I understand, after phase 1, we will get our RN license in Alabama but no BSN degree. We are only guaranteed to work in Alabama because we won't have a degree. I guess because UAB has this program they've set it up so we can work here. After phase 2, our nurse practitioner license can be obtained in any state. I think that's how it works for phase 2 but I'm not certain! I don't see why we wouldn't be able to get our NP license in any state...

I'm sure more people than you think are coming straight out of college!

UAB AMNP 2017
I don't mind sharing. Undergrad (2012)in Biology with a pre-med concentration: 3.6 Masters degree (2015) in Clinical Mental Health Counseling: 3.9 No GRE I did a lot of shadowing in college but not while I was in grad school. I've worked as a substance abuse therapist in a methadone clinic since last October. Is anyone in Birmingham and would maybe like to get together??
-
UAB AMNP 2017
Yes, if your GPA is above 3.2 (overall or last 60 hours) or if you have a masters degree, the GRE is waived. Thank goodness!

UAB AMNP 2017
I read on some of the older AMNP threads that people were offered admission at their interview as well. Hopefully they will do that again this year! Do you know people in the program? I would like to talk to someone in there too!

UAB AMNP 2017
I went to the session again today and got some good info! I'm sure that you've heard some of this before but I'll go through everything she covered. Here are some of the questions and other tidbits: When do we have to choose which master's specialty we want? --During the summer term people will come talk to us about the different specialties and tell us what they entail, where we would be able to practice, etc. We give them our two choices in the fall term and and they decide which specialty we will be admitted to. We are guaranteed one of those specialties. How many applicants do you get and how many are admitted? --We get about 130 applicants and we accept 68-72. I've heard that y'all have gotten hundreds of applications this year, is that true? (I asked this one, can you tell?) --They took applicants from both NursingCAS and UAB Graduate School applications and "there was no way to tell how many we would get." She said they have certainly not gotten hundreds. Yay!!!!! --Clinicals start after the first 7 weeks. --We are only guaranteed to be be able to work as an RN in Alabama because of the whole no BSN degree thing. --There was lots of conversation about prerequisites. All prerequisites have to be done by December in order to enroll in January. Make sure that the classes you have taken comply with UAB's transfer equivalencies. She really emphasized that.
