HIPAA and shadowinf
Hey nurse friends! Happy nurses week! I work in a carduovascular surgical step down unit and have a job shadow scheduled in the ICU to determine if it's the right move for me to make right now (im coming up on 2 years and want to be sure I dont need to simmer and grow on my unit a bit more first). Anyway, the ICU is within the hospital at which I currently work. I obviously want to make the most out of my shadowing experience. Is it a HIPAA violation for me to look up the patient assignment of the nurse I am shadowing? I would love to get there a smidge early and look up the patients like I would if it was my own assignment. I won't technically be responsible for providing care to the patient but it seems like it should qualify under that orientee/student bracket. Thoughts? Thanks!

Hurricane Irma
I live in NH; can they really go after your license in Florida for choosing to evacuate, especially if evacuation is recommended?? Provided that you notify your managers well ahead of time. I understand that your job may choose to terminate you (although that sucks too), but it blows my mind that your license could be in danger for that. I got my RN because I wanted to help people, but my husband and daughter will always come first. If I was in the line of the hurricane, you bet I would be evacuating my family.

New Grad- advice!!
Hi everyone! I am a new grad starting next month on a cardiovascular surgical unit. I wanted to pick your brains! *I currently have a littmann lightweight. Will this work for a cardiac floor, or should I buy a classic or a cardiology? *What education/resource material should I buy? I am already looking through cardiovascular care made incredibly easy. *Time management tips? Brain sheets? *What NOT to do as a new grad in general? My unit does 6 weeks of orientation on the floor, plus a basic dysrhythmia class. Thankfully I know some of the nurses there, so I feel like I will have a couple of support people. Thank you!
