Did I learn enough in clinical?
Hello everyone! I am looking for a bit of advice. I am heading into my second semester of a BSN program. Last semester I had clinical at a community hospital and as I am getting closer to starting the second semester I am feeling like I did not learn enough last semester in clinical. I can count the things I've done on two hands which are give baths, feed patients, drain a catheter, check blood sugars, assist once with a wound dressing (all I did was wrap gauze), and stop an IV so one of my patients could go down for a CT. We had clinical once a week and most of my patients did not require much, they were all elderly with things like renal failure, UTI, altered mental status etc. A few times I went to clinical and there was literally nothing for me to do. I asked the nurses and CNA's if I could help them in ANY way, asked my clinical instructor to assign me more than one patient, and offered my classmates assistance if they needed it (they are all in the same predicament as I). I even asked the IV nurse if I could follow her around, and she pretty much just let me observe her assess IV sites. I'm not sure if what I have learned is adequate for a first semester nursing student or if I am seriously lacking in clinical experience. I should also note that I am the type to learn by repetition and I regularly expressed that I wish clinical was more than one day per week so that I could really dive in and learn as much as I can! My question is ... am I thinking too much into this and should just see what clinical has to offer next semester, or should I think about possibly getting a clinical assistant job to brush up on skills and learn more! also - I did pass the class + clinical component with an A and received excellent feedback from my clinical instructor. I just can't help but feel that I did not learn/ do enough! I really appreciate any advice!

I've completed all of my prerequisites as well but if I don't take the health promotions class over the summer then that'll make it 6 semesters since we can't start any of our core nursing classes until it's complete

I called the school and 5/22 is actually the 1st orientation session! In previous years there were sessions in April but I guess things are different this year. I was considering taking the health promotion class over the summer but the 1st orientation is only a week before the class is due to start : /

Hi : ) Registration for students starting in the fall hasn't opened yet. The registration link that was up was for students starting in JAN 2017 so if you put in your credentials it wouldn't have worked since you were accepted for SEP 2017! Registration for the fall should be up around the 1st of March but I've been checking the site everyday just to make sure I don't miss it. Hope this helps : )

I believe that means your in! I just got a financial aid package in the mail and under my major it said "nursing". If you've received that package take a look it might help to clarify! The admissions office is open on Tuesday ... maybe give them a call?

No letter yet! I am hoping we get them by Friday. I called the admissions office again (because I'm a crazy person : ) ) and asked when we should be getting the letters. I was told that they were sent on the 17th so it should be any day now. The person I spoke with told me that by law she cannot give my decision over the phone but that she would not be surprised if I was "pleased" with the decision that was made. I'm pretty sure she was hinting but I'll wait for the letter before getting too excited!

no need to worry! students applying for the nursing program were the one group of students (accept for freshman) who they encouraged to apply on the Nov. 1st deadline. I spoke with the admissions office about this and any nursing student who applied early action will get their decision soon (this week or next). They are still accepting applications but the spots may be filled (by those of us who applied by Nov 1 and were accepted) and students who applied after Nov 1 will likely have to wait until the spring for their decision. Hope this helps!

I noticed a few new tabs! Like holds, to-do list, student admission etc! Looking at threads from previous years this seems to be a good sign! Is anyone else noticing these tabs?

I've completed almost all of my pre-reqs (except for gen-bio - my school allowed us to take human bio as a pre-req for A&P ... so if I am accepted I'll kind of have to back track and take that class) but if it offers you any encouragement I've seen people with zero to very few sciences under their belt get accepted. You have an excellent GPA and a great TEAS score! Fingers crossed that the letters come sooner rather than later! Best of luck!

I called the admissions office today to double check as well! The person I spoke with said that letters would be going out at the end of this month! So the date I'm telling myself right now is January 5th ... I am counting down the days! I am applying to MCPHS, and Simmons College as well as Bunker Hill. My first choice, of course, is UMB! Fingers crossed! Good luck to everyone!!
