Lol this is gonna be the last thing I say. NO ONE is being dismissive of the CNA. PERIOD. I have said that time and time again. So if you want to continue to beat a dead horse. Be my guest. I have explicity explained what I meant and how I meant it. You choose to take it whichever which way you want. YES I AM AWARE I WILL BE DOING BED BATHS, TURNING PATIENTS, POOP CLEANING AND ALL THE SKILLS A CNA DOES... is that the highlight of everyone's nursing career?? Absolutely not! So why would it be the highlight of my day as a first day clinical student. There are other nurses on this thread that have commented and completely and totally understand where I am coming. IM OUT!

The extreme lack of diplomacy?? First and foremost my university has an open door policy. We are encouraged by our professors and by the Dean of Nursing to be vocal about any problems we may or may not have within the college. They want our feedback on our clinical instructors, they actually ask that we give feedback and fill out surveys on our experience with them. There is no extreme lack of diplomacy on my part by any means. She was just sticking up for me since most of these people on the thread are crude and distasteful. Some of you act like you were never a nursing student. It was one post. The majority of comments on here are accusatory based what they interpreted from the original post. A lot of "reading in between the lines" but they completely missed the boat.

Thank you Lil Nel, you are a gem!!! All I wanted was to vent and not be scolded for it.. lol I am student and this is all relatively new to me. I was just anxious and excited at the same time. But not all of us were paired with CNAs, it was randomly assigned. There were more students then RNs on the floor so they just stuck us with whomever. Next time I go on the floor though I will have my own patient.

Thanks for showing me what type of nurse I don't want to be and how not to treat others. I will however head your advice and try the students section next time. Thanks.

Coming from someone who is in a profession where you should show empathy and compassion daily, I came here to vent as a frustrating student. Not every specialty of nursing is for everyone, and just because I didn't enjoy my first day of clinical doesn't mean I should get grilled for it either. I notice that a lot of people get shamed for the posts they make in this forum and I don't believe that is right. I never said I was too good to be with the CNA, that I hate poop or anything along those lines. It was humbling to see the CNA interact with the patient because he did such a good job. I have the upmost respect for him. So let me make that clear. I was just looking to learn more in the process, I saw the EKG boards on the wall and I had to go find a nurse to ask a question about a rhythm on the monitor. Everytime we went into a patient room the CNA, did not know why they were being hospitalized. It was those types of things that I felt I missed out on. I wasn't expecting someone to come in a stretcher while coding, and everyone running around like crazy.....

I'm sorry... did I say anything in that post about not liking to clean up poop? Hm... I don't think so. I think you may have missed the point of what I was trying to say...

I understand it was one day, but as a nursing student it is a day you dream of... I think many other nursing students can relate. They look forward to their first day of clinical. So when it doesn't live up to the "hype" its kind of a bummer. I am allowed to vent.

Okay everyone, I am just starting my second semester of nursing school and I just had my first day at orientation on the med-surge floor that I will be at this semester. This is my first semester doing clinicals.. Long story short, I absolutely hated it. But there are several factors that may have affected my experience with it. Because it was orientation we were not set up with computer access so some of us were set up to shadow an RN, and others were set up to shadow a CNA. I got set up to shadow a CNA, I felt so unfulfilled.. We literally changed sheets, and cleaned poop the whole time. I was envious of my other classmates that got the opportunity to shadow nurses. The whole day I kept thinking to myself, am I really busting my a** in nursing school for this? It was extremely disheartening and discouraging. I went home almost in tears. Now let me back up and acknowledge the fact, that YES I WAS WITH A CNA, and I am sure it is much better actually shadowing a nurse. I was able to pop in and tag along with other classmates, but even then it was kind of boring. I know I should probably give it another chance but it was not a good first impression at all by any means. I guess I just thought it would be more exciting... I would be able to use more of my nursing skills. I just don't know if I will ever like the med-surge floor.

Hello everyone! I start nursing school in a couple of weeks and just last week I found out a friend of mine flunked out of the program. While I was touring the campus today I overheard a nursing student saying they had failed a class this semester. I'm a bit of an overachiever/worrier I completely understand nursing school is hard. I know it is very hard. But lately I have come across people who make it seem like it's impossible. I didn't come this far to fail out and I have a lot a lot of drive in me. So I just can't wrap my mind around people actually failing the program. it's actually starting to stress me out and cause a little bit of anxiety. I want this so bad but I find myself doubting myself. Asking questions like is this what I want to do? Do I want to put myself through this torture? What if I fail out?? I have worked so hard to get to this point I can't imagine doing anything else but I'm legitly scared going into nursing school. I think I'm scarred from people's horror stories? Any thoughts?

Hello all, I start the nursing program in the spring. Many of the people in this thread are already in the program. Has any here flunked a class or flunked out of the program? Just curious because I know someone there who just flunked out with a semester left. Wanted to get thoughts on how difficult the program actually is. Thanks you guys.

So I am curious to know how much in debt people are that go to UMHB, I've always known it was an expensive school to go to. But know plugging in all the numbers it's a little unsettling. Does anyone know?

I passed mine too!!! My gpa and everything is great. I met all requirements. I spoke with the secretary they said acceptance letters will go out mid November.

@monica are you still going to try to get in for the spring? I have already been accepted into the university. And completed my nursing application. Just have to take the Kaplan.

Hey, ok so I bought the Kaplan study guide for nursing entrance exams. It is general study guide for all nursing entrance exams. And at the very beginning of the book it tells you what areas each specific test (whether it be Hesi, Kaplan, Teas.. Etc) cover. I glanced over the teas part because I have several friends who have taken it and I feel as though the Kaplan maybe a little bit easier. Basic Math such as conversions, ratios, fractions. Writing and Reading and A&P. I think the TEAS may have a little bit more to study. But you need at least a 65% on Math and Reading I believe as well as an overall score of 65% or above. I have bought several books to help me study. I took the pretest in the Kaplan book and did fair on all areas. Math was definitely my weakest so I bought a for dummies book on that. I'm in school right now as well. So whenever I have free time I look over these books. From what people tell me though, it doesn't seem that hard. Also there are YouTube videos you can check out to get individual reviews of the material people have had to study for the Kaplan. If you go to the nursing page on the UMHB website and click on get more info ms. Carpenters info should be listed. Hope this helps!!

Hi Monica! I'm currently in the process of applying to UMHB for the spring. I take my Kaplan on September 30. You need to have a gpa of 3.0 and a core prerequisite gpa of 3.0 or above. If you have any other questions I would get in touch with Mrs. Carpenter! She is amazing!! If you're planning to apply for the spring I would look into asap. Deadline is October 1

Hello you guys! I know I am a little late on this thread. But I will be applying for the nursing program this fall to start in Spring. I will take my Kaplan soon, but I have no idea what material will be on it. I saw on the website that it covers math and reading. But I had heard somewhere that there is also a science portion. Do any of you guys remember whether the test was difficult at all? They raised the minimum to a 65%. I will be spending all my time now trying to prepare for this test. Any thoughts or tips would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!

How did you do in your sciences? I have c's in all mine and I plan on applying for the spring. My gpa will be over 3.0 but it worries me

I'm so happy to find someone from UMHB I have been back and forth with Ms. Carpenter for the past year I plan on applying for the SPRING 17 however I have gotten C's on all my science classes. I plan on retaking some of the other prerequisites to boost my gpa to the minimum. But what are the chances of getting in with C's as long as my gpa is above the minimum. This is stressing me out so bad. More than anything I really really want this.

Hello all! So right now I'm looking into applying to the nursing program at UMHB for the Spring 2016 I got C's in all my science classes. And I plan on retaking a few other classes in the summer to boost my gpa to the minimum of 3.0 does anyone know how hard it is to get into this school and I'll even have a chance getting in with the minimum?
