1. Hi Trish.k, I know it's last minute, but I just booked my crp and mask fit for 9.30am tomorrow (Saturday). ps. Hi Annie, see you in class!!
2. Hi trish.k, Just noticed that the fall round of awards/bursaries applications are now open on the Mohawk website.
3. I went ahead and finished everything from that pre-placement online course. I know some of it has expiry dates, but I figured I'd just get it all done. We will all have to renew those certificates at some point during the course, I guess I'll just be doing mine a bit earlier than others lol. As for the physical mask fit and cpr courses, a friend of mine that's currently in the Sheridan program did it all at the same place on the mountain, the instructor runs the school from his home and my friend said he's fantastic. His website is here: stjos-cpr.ca/index.html (put a www in front) I am going to book there for August, to try and get it all done in one or two visits. If you want to keep in touch and book at the same time, it would be cool to meet a fellow classmate before school starts! Chris.
4. Hi trish.k, Definitely apply for bursaries and grants. The FNAP application process for Mohawk opens early July and it's all online. Compose yourself a good cover letter explaining why you would be a good recipient, as you need to upload that during the application process. (you probably know this already) I found out because I have already submitted my application.....unfortunately, I was applying for the summer round of submissions, oops jumping the gun as usual lol. No wonder I never heard back from them. I'm like you and can't wait to get started. It's a longer process to begin upgrading and applying, then wait to actually begin school, than it is to finish the course! Oh well, soon enough we'll be stressing about OSCE's and assignments that are due! Chris.
5. No trish.k, the only thing I've received is a congratulations package after accepting the offer and it was mostly written confirmation of acceptance, along with a reminder to book the assessment for communications test. Apart from that, nothing yet. LL041 is the comms most end up having to take and you've already got that, so you are good to go. My friend has just finished first semester of the Sheridan RPN program and he said comms took up a LOT of homework time, so I'm happy to be able to skip that. He suggested replacing it with one of the compulsory electives to get at least one of them out of the way early, but I think I'll just see how I go in first semester with just the nursing content. It's been many years since I was a full time student with a heavy work load.
6. I can confirm now, that one can be exempt from taking a communications course! I scored high enough on my assessment exam today (which they mark as soon as you finish) and have been exempted from communications altogether.
7. Hi all, I was wondering who will be attending the September 2016 stream of the RPN program at Mohawk and how your preparations are going. I have submitted my OSAP application, as well as a financial profile and cover letter on the Mohawk site, applying for grants and bursaries. Both of these are now open for submissions. I have my final Hep B shot next month and have vaccination forms signed by my G.P. for all the others. Early I know, but that's what happens when you give me too much time to sit around and wait to start school. I write the "assessment for success" communications exam at Mohawk today. I've heard two different things about the results of this test: Firstly, that if you score well enough, that you can be exempt from doing any communications in the first semester and second, that no matter how well you score, that you still must do one communications course first semester. I expect it will be the latter, but I guess I'll find out for sure today and report back here. So, if you are going to Mohawk in September, please introduce yourself. I'm a 54 year old male and will probably be the oldest person in our class :) Chris.
8. Woo-hoo! Just accepted my Mohawk offer on OCAS, it's official, going to school in September. trish.k, if you haven't already, go check your OCAS. See you in September.
9. Mine said the same thing today, but also said I had an offer with an expiry date of May 1st. I found it confusing so I called admissions and they confirmed that this is in fact an offer and that the "decision pending" part, means my decision is pending. So if yours says the same thing as mine, then congratulations are in order!
10. The hep B vaccination series will take about 7 months to complete. First shot, then one month later the second shot, then six months till the third. You need to get that started immediately. They will charge you about $40 a shot if you go to your G.P. however, in Ontario, you can walk into a sexual health clinic and get the series for free which is what I did. I have my last shot in May. I have heard of people getting them done in a shorter time frame, but I wasn't given that option.
11. Thanks, I will be shouting about it if and when it happens, don't worry! lol. Are you going to hold out in hope of a spot at Algonquin?
12. Went to Mohawk's open house at Mcmaster University today and was told by the RPN admissions people, that first round offers won't be going out until next week, possibly the week after! Arghhhh, more waiting.
13. I applied to Mohawk and Sheridan. I live 5 minutes from the Mcmaster health sciences building, so Mohawk is my first choice. The open house is this coming Saturday, so I expect offers will be out this week. Last year at the open house they asked the crowd who already had offers and a bunch of people raised their hands. I've now gone from checking five times a day, to checking every five minutes!
14. There you go, offers are flowing for you, congrats. Which college is your first choice?
15. Yeah that sounds like an error, although it's difficult to imagine how such an error could be made. I've certainly never heard of this before.
16. It shows your application is competitive, you might yet get your first choice!
17. Congratulations!!
18. I think the final writing of the HOAE for this stream was Feb 26th, so the offers should be real soon :)
19. Only about a month to wait for offers now LOL
20. Nice, I got 82% on the HOAE and 96% on the prerequisites. I just did them all recently through adult upgrading. I looked at some sample questions for the AC-HPAT and it looked harder than the HOAE, did you find it harder?
21. How did you do on the HOAE?
22. Hi folks, I spoke with admissions at Mohawk by phone and they too said mid-March for the first round of offers. No surprise there, but good to be given confirmation. I wonder if I can go an entire day without checking the status of my applications....probably not lol.
23. Excellent point :)
24. Pokerhauntus Centennial College is an approved college, but with conditions. Sheridan is the better choice of the two. You can check here for the list of "College of Nurses Ontario" approved college's. Practical Nursing (RPN) Programs For anyone yet to write the HOAE: I purchased a study guide prior to my exam, which included practice tests that were timed and while this certainly helped get used to working with the added pressure of watching the clock, in all honesty, the practice questions had little to do with the actual test. If I can offer anyone who has yet to write the HOAE a word of advice it is this: They give you scrap paper, so as you do each section and answer something but are unsure, choose and answer and move on, but write the question number down on your scrap paper to go straight back to that question if you have spare time left at the end of the section. I wish I had done that but didn't think of it until the entire test was over, so I found myself scrambling to locate the questions I wanted to re-visit in the remaining free time I had, which was usually around 6-8 minutes for each section. In terms of difficulty of the exam, I feel that if you have recently done your required sciences, math and English, then you will find it very manageable. Congrats to those with offers already! I've been checking daily but still nothing and like everyone else, I hate the waiting game lol. Good luck to all. Chris.
25. Howdy all, I have applied to Mohawk and Sheridan (as a back up) for September 2016. Wrote my HOAE on January 28th at Mohawk and the following are my results:

HOAE - Academic Aptitude 61/75

HOAE - Information in the Natural Sciences 50/60

HOAE - Reading Comprehension 27/35

HOAE - Spelling 38/45

HOAE - Vocational Adjustment Index 78/90

If my math is correct, this equates to an 83% pass which I'm very happy with. I was terrified going into the exam. I found the exam to be ok, but I had also just finished my OSSD by way of adult upgrading, so a lot of it was very fresh in my mind which I am sure helped a lot. Mohawk said that the results would not be available for a couple of weeks, but I got mine in a day or two. For anyone that is really curious about their results, have a look on your OCAS dashboard under the heading "experience", they show there that you have written the HOAE and will display your raw scores before they show up on your college application. Obviously, the percentile scores won't show up until everyone has written the exam for these streams. I have read the same as others in this thread, that Mohawk and Sheridan at least, start sending out offers after February 1st so I will be checking daily lol. Nice to kinda meet you all and good luck! Chris.
