I think the deadline was Feb 1st last year (as opposed to Jan 15th this year), so it looks like they are a little bit ahead of last year's schedule. I just read all of the posts from last year's Umass Amherst applicants to get a good idea of the waiting/interview process :) I received an email on Wednesday inviting me for an interview. I was really surprised, I thought it would take a lot longer for them to respond! Maybe they are still processing applications, I bet they have a ton to go through. Probably a good thing that you submitted it in-person, though. Being patient is difficult in times like these!

Hello! I sent my application in by mail on January 2nd and received an email stating that my application was complete a few days after. I have an in-person interview tomorrow morning, which I am both nervous and excited about! I'm trying to not overthink it, but I am working on being prepared as well. Umass Amherst is my first choice. Good luck, everyone!
