Duquesne Second Degree BSN - Class of 2017
Hello Lari24. I am in the program now. Our first semester was 22 credit hours with 6 classes: Contemporary Nursing, Info Tech, Fundamentals, Health Assessment, Genetics, and Pathophysiology. We had labs/clinical for Fundamentals, and Labs for HA. This semester is 24 credit hours and a lot of us are struggling, but it is doable. We have class 8am-4:50 on mondays, 8am-5:45 tuesdays, and then clinical days W, H, F. We have had one test monday and two on Tuesday, which is really stressful. Midterms were last week and we had one each day M-H (one of our classes did not have a midterm). The professors do give us all the material, but they often have to give us recorded lectures because they run out of time in class, which means we have 8-10 hours of class but then have to come home and essentially "teach" ourselves the rest of the lesson. We also have had a pediatrics exam every week for the past 3 weeks, so we are taking an exam, then learning "all" the material for the next exam in 1 day so we can take the next exam the following week. It really is a lot of work and you have to spend a lot of time dedicated... but what else would you expect with a program like this?

Baby and school?
Forgot to add that I started my pre-reqs when baby #3 was about 6m, but was in college classes and working towards my degree at that point for babies #1 and 2. Newborns are easy as pie as long as you can get handle feeding at night. Just head to bed a bit earlier and then work on flashcards or something while doing night feedings. You just have to make the most of your time.

Baby and school?
I had my first at 17 and second at 18, graduated with my first degree (BA in non-nursing field) at 21 with magna cum laude honors. I taught for a year, had another baby, then started an ABSN program this fall and have A's in every class but one heading into finals (shooting to raise that B to an A as well but it will be close). My children are now 7, 5 (almost 6) and 18m. I am also pregnant with #4 and will have this one in April, smack-dab in the middle of the semester. Also, hubs is a 3rd year medical student. We are both 24 years old. Gurrrl, you can totally do it.

Nurse Corps Scholarship 2016-2017
My stats: 1year teaching English. 3.76 gpa Absn program. No experience whatsoever. Honestly from what I've gathered from other winners, they take the letters of Rec and YOUR ESSAYS as a huge portion of your scoring. Gpa and previous experience haven't seemed to matter much.

Nurse Corps Scholarship 2016-2017
I was in the second wave of finalists award emails and my contract hasn't been signed as of 8am this morning. It's sort of terrifying.

Not it that I don't believe you but it seems weird he would confirm the credit check thing when they've been consistent about denying it.

Nurse Corps Scholarship 2016-2017
It's a W4 form, a verification of enrollment form (this hs to be filled out by your school and given an official seal), and you have to electronically sign the contract.

Nurse Corps Scholarship 2016-2017
Even after they are "all" given out, lots of people don't make the deadline or turn down the scholarship, so there is still so much time!!
-
Nurse Corps Scholarship 2016-2017
Is there a facebook group for Nurse Corps people? I would like to discuss specifics and get more info if possible.

I GOT MY EMAIL! They sent it about 25 minutes ago, so 8:05am. My last name starts with a B and I'm in Ohio. I'm so excited to be given this opportunity! Edited to add: I truly don't believe last name or location has anything to do with it. I am an ABSN student (about $50k) and I have a 3.72+ GPA. 1 year of teaching english to ESOL and special education students.

I don't think location or last name really has anything to do with it, at least from what I've gleaned off previous years' posts. But like in all things with this scholarship: WHO KNOWS. We all need to just keep the faith! There's so much time left!

Nurse Corps Scholarship 2016-2017
Jsam16, that's interesting. I was thinking out loud to my husband and he thought maybe they don't send them all out at once so they don't receive back so much paperwork at once and it's easier to manage. Obviously both of us are creating scenarios where I still have a good chance, but it's a thought~

People with credit checks who did NOT get an award, what are your stats? I know they grade the essays and CV/letters of rec. very strongly, so stats aren't everything. I had an english teacher read over my essays and they were "okay" so that's up for question..My stats are: Program: ABSN EFC: 0 GPA: 3.73 1 year teaching English to ESOL and special education students in a low-income school.

Nurse Corps Scholarship 2016-2017
Idk if a laptop per se is covered (though that and an iPad with certain tech specs are required) but with the less strain on my personal finances I would be able to purchase one myself.

I really wish we found out sooner. I need to know if I can afford to purchase a parking pass, extra scrubs, a laptop, etc
