Is an accelerated BSN worth $87K?
You're welcome! And the other school was National University, but I am not 100% certain if those transfer. I thought it was a private, non-profit school but please double check to wherever you're looking to transfer your BSN. I did my public speaking class with them and it was awesome and easy, and transferred so far. Maybe I'll see you up North soon! :)

Is an accelerated BSN worth $87K?
For everyone who commented, kindly or brash, I AM indeed looking at the community college options and getting creative with ideas on how to complete them efficiently while working full time. From 100% online classes in Nor Cal for GE, to moving to Reno NV or AZ.... Still searching for a way! I have a few schools I am contacting, and met with my local Comm College this week to see what other classes I need. So, your words didn't fall on deaf ears. :)

Is an accelerated BSN worth $87K?
No she did her pre reqs at SLT Comm College and then did accelerated BSN at University of Nevada Reno which was 16 mos. She was explaining to me that there is a "good neighbor" program between CA and Reno NV so there was not out of state tuition. You can apply and enroll to any CA comm college and attend 100% online classes for your GE, and focus on nursing pre reqs at local colleges. She also was explaining how she did the BSN pre reqs at the same time as something else, I can't remember it all now. But she advised to find schools on a quarterly system so you can get more classes done within a years time instead of semesters that go longer. Good luck.

Is an accelerated BSN worth $87K?
Hi Hopeful, I know, it's just terrible here! Where are you located? My friend, BSN, (starts new job for insurance co. on Mon. making $70k.... She's only been licensed for 2 years.) said to take online classes for GE at Southlake Tahoe Community College, and then coordinate the science labs at the comm. colleges here and enroll to as many as possible. National Univ in SD has 8 week science classes with labs on Sat. I think. Just not sure if National Transfers

Is an accelerated BSN worth $87K?
I am stuck taking 1-2 at a time due to my work schedule. As I mentioned before, CA CC are impacted. There are wait lists for pre-reqs... So what kind of availability can you assume I would have taking night classes only? In addition, I take my GPA seriously. I have a 3.7 now. I wouldn't want to overwhelm myself with full time work and school and have my GPA suffer so in turn my nursing school application for ADN wouldn't be considered. I think the idea of AZ could also be an excellent idea, and I think there are job opportunities in my field there. I'll check it out. I don't know if out of state tuition would apply to me though? I was under the impression you had to be a resident for 1+ year to avoid that added tuition cost. And just because I applied for something, doesn't mean I am blind to all other opportunities. I've applied to plenty of jobs that I don't always take because they are total crap. :) Application doesn't mean automatic follow through or guarenteed acceptance on either side.

Is 90k in loans worth my BSN?
Hi OP! I was the OP of a very similar thread, with LOTS of responses and valuable info. My thread was called "Is an accelerated BSN worth $87K?"... Let me tell you, the answer is no from nearly everyone. Find it here: https://allnurses.com/general-nursing-student/is-an-accelerated-1055351-page5.html May I ask what school you are looking at? I am referencing Chamberlain in Las Vegas.

Is an accelerated BSN worth $87K?
Hi Doglady, I actually did not see your post at all until you told me you commented. Which I went back and read, and thank you for sharing. I agree with you on the Murphys law, and it seems my life tends to go in that direction constantly. The past 5 years I have had 4 family members pass away, I have lost a full time job of 5 years, 2 car accidents, moved 3 times... so yes, I get it. And most if not all of these situations are not due to my lack of work ethic, paying bills, paying attention while driving etc etc. Just to give examples. Some of the posters here are definitely getting upset with me, or at least coming across that way, so I hope no one feels like I am disregarding what they are saying or wasting their time.... Anyways, thank you for your sound advise. I appreciate it.

Is an accelerated BSN worth $87K?
Thank you 2soon2b... Yes all of the points that you make are exactly the ones I have considered, too. And sadly I do not have any family or a partner to help. I am flying solo in this life. : ) I also agree with you that it is about average, if not less, than some pay to attend 4 year college at $20k per year, or at USD in San Diego, $60K a year! Thanks again for everyone's advice. I have not come to a decision yet. But I do have a pending application, and will find out at the end of the month if I am accepted or not. To add a twist, my job offered my a new position yesterday w/ possibly higher pay and flexible full time hours to accommodate my school. So I could then do my pre-reqs at the Comm. college here however at only 1 class at a time... it would take my years. Decisions, decisions....

Is an accelerated BSN worth $87K?
How long did this take you? It is very competitive in CA and many of the community colleges have wait-lists for their pre reqs, as well as for the RN program. That is what the majority of this conversation has been, just all the options in general an the pros/cons for all....

Is an accelerated BSN worth $87K?
Thank you for your feedback, too! I was orig. enrolled in National Univ. in S. Cal too for my pre reqs and was going to apply to their BSN program after completion of my pre reqs, which was 2 years, 5 days a week. They only take 50 people per cohort, when up to 300 apply and you need close to a 4.0 and high 80s for your TEAS, which I think is common in CA. I was also told you only get 3 times to apply in your lifetime to their BSN program. It was $45K through them. At the end of it all, it did not seem worth it to me to risk the time spent re applying with the possibility of not getting in. In addition to that, I would still need loans to live on while in the 2 year BSN program. It is more expensive to take loans to live on when my rent alone is $1k in North County San Diego. I would be looking at more debt than by choosing a for-profit school. I have not heard any horror stories about these schools actually. I went on to Instagram and searched "#Chamberlain" and other similar tags to find students in the country who were attending. I asked them what their opinion and experience has been so far... everyone had nothing but positive things to say about the program, their teachers, clinicals... Now, on the other side of that argument, I have a friend who did her pre-reqs at community college and did an accelerated BSN in Vegas that cost $70K in debt. She was encouraging me to do the same as her since her school is highly regarded. She said that for-profit schools encourage you to pass, and thus not getting as good as an education as non-profit schools... so I really do not know what to think. This same friend that I mentioned about, has over $100K in debt that she took out between federal loans and private. Her private loan is fixed interest. Her minimum payments are $500-$600/mo and she is paying $2K a month to get them paid off in 5,6 years max. And yes, if anyone as any insight on Chamberlain... I would love to hear about it. Or even West Coast who charges $120K for 36 month BSN.

Beachy, thank you SO much! You have been very, very helpful! I know a few of those campuses are new. CA just opened their first session May 2 of this year. I want to assume that if most of their campuses have full approval, then so will NV. This may be a blind wish on my behalf.

Is an accelerated BSN worth $87K?
Thank you for your feedback. Maybe I made a mistake in saying that it accelerated, sorry. I guess compared to the 2-3 years or more spent doing my pre reqs at nightin community college, plus a 2 year wait list for a 2 year ADN program... the $87K BSN is more accelerated than that. I am not sure if I can apply to a traditional BSN program actually. I think it is highly competitive in CA and I am 27 years old, so I am unsure of that as an option in general because I thought 4 year BSN were for people who were out of high school, have taken SATs or whatever. (Totally clueless about this option.) I have a friend who did pre reqs at community colleges in CA, then went to a 15 month accelerated BSN in Las Vegas. Her tuition for those 15 months alone were $70K. But she had a job immediately after graduating, before she took her NCLEX in cardiac ICU and they are building a trauma 1 in a year, which she wants to get into ED nursing. I guess I feel as if I am in a jam, and I am sure others out there may feel the same as me. I have no family that I can live with for free while in school (this was suggested to me in another post) I have to work full time to barely live check to check currently, my job is unstable so I do not want to get stuck doing PT pre reqs at a community college only to lose my job, look for another one and it may not align with my class schedule and I may not be able to afford my rent for a bedroom (San Diego,CA) is $1000 alone. So I am not sure if this maybe helps people understand why I am even considering doing the $87K school option. It is 36 months only, cheaper than living in CA if I have to take more loans out to live, I can do my profession in Las Vegas and I feel like the sooner I can get a degree, the sooner I can start to pay it back instead of waiting up to possibly 7 years for an associates even....

Wow Beachy, thank you so much for your provided links and in depth explanation. I really appreciate it. I am curious about the other Chamberlain campuses located in other parts of the country. I know they have a few in FL, IL, NC and more.

Thank you for doing some research on this subject yourself. Would you mind showing me where you saw that info. on the Las Vegas provisional approval? This is something I am unfamiliar with. And may I ask which school you are attending? Thank you again.

Chamberlain College- Sacramento
Can anyone private message me please in regard to the student loans they are taking w/ Chamberlain? Thank you!
-
Is an accelerated BSN worth $87K?
Yes Beachy (Sorry if I am not replying correctly to you- I am new to posting on this site!) it is Chamberlain. This is their link to student/consumer info: Student Consumer Information Here is the what I have seen in regards to their NCLEX pass rate: NCLEX Pass Rate The National Council Licensing Examination (NCLEX) is a national standardized examination for nursing licensure taken by graduates of pre-licensure nursing programs. Chamberlain College of Nursing's 2014 national average NCLEX pass rate was 83.27%. I have seen other sites that say 90% but only 33% pass rate due to varied levels of nursing degrees they offer I guess? I decided to go by what was on their site. But here is another post on that Student/Consumer link: How long will it take me to complete this program? The program is designed to take 36 months to complete. Of those that completed the program in 2014-2015, 90% finished in 36 months. I have also taken to other social media sites and contacted random students at other Chamberlain locations and gotten their feedback, and I have heard nothing but rave reviews about the staff, SIM labs, and everything really. So this is just another aspect of my research, taking to allnurses to get feedback on the financial portion since I have no experience w/ student loans, or debt of any kind actually.

Chamberlain Nursing School... Is it worth it?
Hello! I have heard MANY arguments against going into this much debt over school. HAS ANYONE OUT THERE DONE THIS? WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR EXPERIENCE SO FAR PLEASE IN REGARDS TO JOBS OUT OF SCHOOL AND LOAN RE-PAYMENT? Thank you!!!! Just trying to find as many opinions and personal experiences as possible... was this much debt worth it? Did you find a job that paid well after school in order for you to re-pay the loans?
