  1. You need to look it up on CINAHL. Look under the author's name. CINAHL should be available through your school's library.
  2. Obviously nursing has a long way to go if we ever plan on getting anywhere as a profession. Never in my short career have I ever looked down upon another nurse because of her education level. I am an ADN nurse who is now working on a master's. Until we can join together as a group and work for a common good we will never achieve any goals. Come on people. We are in a desperate time right now with the nursing shortage and why in the world would any one want to join this profession after reading this post. 4. we keep bags of NS and LR in our blanket warmer so they are always available.
  5. I have been a nurse now for 6 years. I have been working in a level 2 trauma center for 10 months. before that I had experience in long term care, home health, 4 years of pediatrics, and 1 year in an ENT office. We have hired some new grads in our department and they have struggled somewhat. I would recommend at least 2 years ICU experience even though several ERs are hiring new graduates. Some people may do very well but there is a lot to learn and unfortunatly sometimes you dont have the opportunity to take your time or go find someone for help like you may in other units. I have enjoyed the ER extremely and do not wish to do anything else. I wish I would have spent time in either PICU or ICU before taking on this role.
  6. I agree that there should be some standard level of entry. Not to say that one level of education is better than another. I obtained my associate degree in 95 and have since gone on and am now working on my master's. Nursing has been striving toward calling itself a profession since I started and differentiating the different types of education would be a start. The issue of the state board has come up and I believe that there should be different exams for the different levels. It is a completely different type of education and those that have obtained that should be rewarded with increase pay and yes, those letters do mean something, especially to those that have earned them. I do not think that obtaining a BSN made me a better nurse but it has opened my mind and my ability to think more critically and holistically than I could before. I didn't learn anything in my ADN program about family or community health nursing and I certainly didn't have a management and leadership class.
