We have to take a medication math test the first day of each new class (starts next week). I have a study guide of practice problems and I'm really struggling with most of the questions. I usually do okay with math but there are so many distractors in these questions I don't even know to start. I'm going to post 2 examples and ANY help explaining how to get the correct answer would be greatly appreciated! 1. Cefotaxime (Claforan) 900 mg IV Q 6 hours in 25 mL D5 1/2 NS for a 5 y/o child weighing 18 kg. Safe dose = 50-200 mg/kg/day given Q 6 hours. Concentration = 50 mg/mL IV over 30 min Stock = 1 Gm powder Directions = Dilute with 10 mL sterile water for injection to make 95 mg/mL. Stable in refrigerator 10 days. Calculate the amount needed. Is the dose safe? 2. Gentamicin 45 mg IV q8h for a child weighing 45 lb. The recommended dosage is 6 to 7.5 mg/kg/day in three to four divided dosages. What is the safe 24-hour dosage range for this child? What is the divided dosage range?
