I actually got a job in Pediatric Burn ICU that I will start on August 13! :) It kind of happened really fast, and I was shocked that I was able to get this opportunity. I went for a shadow day on Monday, and they offered the job on the spot to me. I am so excited, and I know this experience will be invaluable! BUT, I would LOVE to do the school PRN thing too! That may be what happens in the long run. I can see myself doing that in a few years, and that would definitely set me up to where I can easily transition into school nursing. I am just happy I get to work with kiddos now!

Yes! I definitely plan to stay until I get my one year, but I have applied to an outpatient cardiology pediatric clinic. So far, I have not heard anything back from any of the pediatric clinics. However, the PRN job did call me back and I may hear something from the manager. I figured I can at least start working 1 shift a week and see where that leads me. It would be AMAZING if I could go on full time there. I figured it would be good experience, but I feel it is just SO competitive here where I live in Houston. Ill keep looking into more Preop or PACU positions! Maybe I will get lucky and be able to get one! Only a couple of more months left until I am at my one year mark! :) Thanks so much for the response and advice!

I started my nurse residency in Oct '17 on a telemetry unit (glorified med/surg), where we have 6 patients every night and hardly any PCA's or a secretary. I have quickly become burned out, and I have really been trying to figure out what I want to do next. In school I always wanted to do NICU, until I had capstone in pediatrics and fell in love with that. Unfortunately, I was not able to get into either one of those areas and really took a job that I was offered for the experience. Since I had experienced this exact unit during clinicals, I figured I could handle it. I work nights and I am NOT a night person. We are understaffed and always have to have a float (I see this is fairly common on a telemetry unit), but I am just not enjoying my job at all, but I am not sure where to go from here. I recently applied for research nurse positions, and also a PRN Pedi OR position. I have been in contact with HR about the OR, but have heard nothing from the Research. The thing about the research position is it's another residency. HOWEVER, this is a completely different area and I wouldn't mind joining another residency...especially for research. SO, here I am and I just don't know what route would be best for me, but I do not want night shift anymore, and I am not liking the idea of staying bedside at this point...My background is accounting. This was a career move, and I have just been sad that I am not enjoying it like I thought. Also, the things I craved most about nursing, I am not really getting either. We are so busy I never really get to slow down to get to know any of my patients...AND being on nights doesn't make it easy. Any advice?

Update: I did turn a position down, and heard back from the hospital I was hoping to hear from. I start my new job on the cardiac telemetry unit in October! Passed boards as well. Looking forward to starting my new career! Thanks for the advice.

Thank you for the response. I am hoping I receive an offer from St. Luke's, since I would like to work there. However, I have spoken to professors and nurse friends and they have said opposite of what you just said. Basically, the one hospital that I am referring to does not have the best reputation, and I would like to be in TMC if given the opportunity since it aligns better with my career goals. I am at the point in my life where I do not want to take "any" job if I do not feel it is the right fit (on my second career, and I did that in the past and I was not happy in the long run). I will definitely think about what you said, and appreciate the feedback. Who knows if I will even get an offer, regardless. I may have no other choice then to wait. I have applied to several jobs, so maybe I will get an interview other than the ones I have had, soon. Thanks again!

I have a dilemma. I graduated August 11 with my BSN, and currently the job situation in Houston is scarce. I did match day before my captstone started and went for NICU and didn't get an offer (Memorial Hermann). After having pediatrics in capstone I realized that is where I truly want to be! I had an interview at St. Lukes last week, and also Clear Lake Regional for PPU. I have not received offers for those yet, but in the event that I do, I am not sure if I should sign a 2 year contract if I truly want to work at MH in pediatrics. So, should I accept an offer (if I get one), or should I hold out for the next match day which the job would start in December. So either October or December... but who knows if I would even get an offer at MH... this is tough.

Congrats everyone! Yes that is normal and we can only make sure transcripts are received and immunization record. Well, and CPR. The rest we are waiting for instructions. I'm so excited for you and can't wait to meet you all! :)

Hey! So I just called admissions and spoke with one of the representatives (cannot remember who exactly), but I basically just mentioned it had been 12 weeks since the application date and I was following up like instructions had told us to do and confirmed they received everything. I received my invitation for an interview about an hour after the phone call from Irma. Not sure if that was coincidence or not, but I strongly believe persistence is key! I would follow up and just let them know you just want to make sure there is nothing else that needs to be done. It will look good on your part! :) good luck!

Hey! No, I had been asking around, but I think I will stay where I am for now (Dickinson). I drive to Galveston everyday right now for work, so I figured I would continue to do so and see how it works until my lease is up at least. I agree! Once we get the FB page I feel it will be much easier to decide! Thanks so much! You too!

Me too. I am going to start going through each one this week. I noticed she has the Facebook page listed as UTMB SON class of spring 2017. I'm assuming it's summer. It doesn't look like it has been created yet.
