Hillsborough Community College Fall 2017
Hello everyone, as of yesterday I officially graduated the HCC nursing program, our pinning is Tuesday. I just want to say best of luck going into the program. You can make it a stress-free, happy one with due diligence. Don't allow yourself to jump on the anxiety feeding anxiety wagon. Also, sometimes I get alerts here and sometimes I don't. So whenever yal create a FB group and you all want me to join to potentially answer questions, I'll be more than happy to, just send me a PM here and hopefully I'll get the alert. Also, never forget to mentor the people coming behind you, we are the new millennium nurses that refuse to eat our young. Guide, help and mentor, its what we are meant to do. Much love to everyone!

lol not sure about being hypochondriac being that I'm fairly healthy (other than my hypothyroidsm) and hope it stays that way. I can only hypothesize that it has to do with the fact that english is my second language and I hyper-focus on the spelling of words. I can't pronounce them well half of the time, but I do remember them :)

I did not take neither of those classes. But throughout the program i realized that I have a thing for memorizing medications so it's very easy for me to remember them. Its really odd but I happened to remember a very very old med and what it did, I heard about when I was 19 yrs old and my mom was taking it, I'm 43 now. How I remember them, not really sure but I do. However, some people in my class struggled with meds and did take the class.....On assessment, you will learn that in the program.

1 regular clinical day and 1 mental health clinical day weekly, for the duration of mental health which is not the full semester. There are two days of lecture class (one of those days having mental health lecture, so its a full day) , the clinicals or classes might be back to back. During my mental health clinical I was at the hospital til 930 or 10pm. Get home after 11pm. Then had to be at the hospital for regular clinical the next day at 630am. Other people that had another day or hospital didn't get the crummy schedule. But I had to make it happen.

Yes, once a week except for the third semester where you will have regular clinicals and mental health clinicals.

You're welcome. The benefit of study group has variables. One, depends on your learning style. Some people do really good and even need study groups. I have ADD (unmedicated) so I need breaks often when I'm studying, so I always did my studying on my own. Two, alot of times study groups ends up turning into a get together and group looses focus of what they're there for. Study time is so so precious to be wasting it. Although I did observe in my class a study group of 3 that did well, but they were very focused and wouldn't talk about anything except study material. So, I'd say if you must use a study group, make it small and have someone in charge to redirect any side conversations.

If you can afford it, I would highly recommend not working. I didn't work but I did see the exhaustion, frustration, anxiety and lower grades from some of the working ones (not all but most). Not because they were not capable but because there is only so many hours in the day.

I passed my TEAS with a 61. I'm finishing my last semester of nursing with a 95%. TEAS doesn't determine the kind of nurse you will become. 13 people in my class with higher TEAS scores than me, did not make it until the end. Please do not be ashamed of it.

You need enc1102 to get the ADN. Alot of people had to take it during their Christmas break because they weren't going to be able to graduate without it.
-
Hillsborough Community College Fall 2017
Yes, enc1102 I took before the program. Its ALOT of writing. Would highly recommend it gets done before the program. If the other class you're talking about is Mental Health, you have to take it within the program.

Ok, so I decided to sell my books and just posted them on craigslist. I'll post the link here in case anyone is interested, before I cross post it. They're in pretty good condition, especially the Med Surge book, as I'm more of a ebook reader. And yes, for the people here I would hold (in order of request) them until you get the acceptance letter. I'm in no hurry to sell. Nursing School Books

Hillsborough Community College Fall 2017
Is this for fall? I got my acceptance in april, this of course was in 2015. We had a deadline of Jan 10th i think, for the fall.

Hillsborough Community College Fall 2017
That is accurate. Mine did not change to "received" until the same day I got my acceptance packet. Not sure why, but they ended up calling me and emailing the packet, instead of mailing it regularly. I know that the wait sucks, I've been there. The only thing I can tell you is, visit with family, share time with them, go places, call them, email them, because before you know it, your focus will be shifted, and that will be for a full two years, for most. So try and take advantage of the time you have now.

The name of the app is NCLEX Mastery

OMG! You're doing phenomenal to be speaking english for such a short time and going into nursing. What helped me was to read alot of practice questions, with the same "lingo" as what they use in nursing school, hesi and nclex. I used the Nclex mastery app on the phone, it's $30 but they do sales for $15 every so often, keep an eye out for it, meanwhile, use the free version.

I did send an unofficial copy of my transcripts with my application. Not sure if it was necessary or not. For those like me where english is not the first language, please work on your timing as all of the exams are timed, especially the HESI's. Clinical rotations vary, I never went to Tampa Gen or Brandon Hosp. The gpa that they use is the one from pre-requisites. However, when there are ties, they use the overall to break the tie.

You're welcome. All I ask is that all of you pay it forward to the people coming after you. Never forget where you come from and lend a helping hand. Its what we future nurses do. :)

Not only gossip is toxic, but it will ALWAYS, make it to the instructors ears. People will do desperate things in desperate times. Keep in mind, you will be asking those same instructors for recommendation letters in your last semester.

Hillsborough Community College Fall 2017
As soon as we started getting acceptance letters, we created a global HCC Nursing FB group. People were able to trade campuses and other information, as it was an option then. Then we also created a Class FB group, but that one has to be only for the class peers as class information will probably be shared and nobody wants to violate confidentiality agreements that have to be signed. And post the links here so people can join. Whoever does it make sure and filter people, and make sure they were accepted into the program. One other important thing that comes to mind. Everyone will be in a pink cloud in the beginning and getting along well. Please, please, please, make sure that, a good attitude remains during the whole program. Leave gossip out of study groups. Things WILL get stressful, and you only have each other to get through. Every class has the one or two that do extremely well, don't hate, see what they are doing, but dont use them only when help is needed, not fair and people can see through it. Encourage and help the ones that are not doing well, do NOT join in their anxiety, it is contagious. Don't judge, every one is fighting their own battles we don't know about, even the annoying ones :). And, never ever, refuse a helping hand, even if you don't agree with how they study, you never know when you might need to use the same tools.

The content of the program is a lot, and difficulty is relative. It has consume alot of my time, but I wouldn't say for me it was extremely difficult. Teachers have the capability of making it better or worse though. I do recommend while in class, try and do the best on exams, so when you go to take the HESI end of semester exams, you don't need any points or at least very little, takes alot of the stress out. Most semesters are 2 days of lecture and 1 day of clinicals, except when you have to take Mental Health which is the 2nd semester, but it is a shorter class. During that time you have 2 to 3 days lectures and two clinical days. When I came in English II was a requirement for acceptance, not sure if it still is. I am missing some of the basics classes like nutrition and stats. The classes can be finished while in the concurrent program, after the ASN.

Yes, you will have the option of getting the hard copy books with or without ebooks. Some people just buy used books and get the codes also. Different semesters have different lab hour requirements and yes, there are lab personnel that will help you get checked off and practice your skills. Tip. Don't wait to get lab hours done til the end, nobody needs that kind of stress. But yes, it is at your leisure.

You're welcome. Yes, if I remember correctly, you knew during the first week. The division varies. It changed during the middle of our program. They used to take requests and then they switched it and now is pretty much assigned. I do know that they use LRMC and South Florida Baptist quite a bit for the Plant City campus. But other people have gone to Tampa Gen and St. Josephs I believe.
