  1. It is a sad situation from all angles. It is a very corrupt system and the tax payers pay for it. As a nurse, all you do is push pills and do not even use MARs in the units or at the pill lines. Sick call slips are not part of the legal chart...etc, etc. it is a chaotic, disorganized mess. Both the prisioners and the staff are doing time...the inmates waiting for their EOS and the staff waiting to retire. The pay is not better than the private sector and the standard of care and work ethics are less then the private sector. It is a dangerous job because the inmates have drugs and weapons and the staff looks the other way...it is easier to ignore then to follow the rules. Nurse practitioners and PAs are used to pass pills, work shifts, etc. Nurses are just pill pushers as well. The MDs make over 200 K per year and see 4-6 people per day! If you can live with yourself...it is not stressful work! Unless you have strong skills before going in there, you will not prosper in technique or skills. You asked about the BOP, thus the above statements reference the Federal Corrections. I have worked for State Corrections and found it to be a poorer system, but more efficient , professional. I worked for them for many years and enjoyed/learned a lot. i have never been an advocate for privatization, until I came to BOP! It needs to be and hopefully it will stop being such a fat rich cow! good luck and my condolences for all those caught in that system.... You spend enough time there...you start thinking it is a sweet deal...it is not! It is horrible!
  2. Has anybody worked for BOP?
