Hello fellow operating room nurses! Does your facility use smoke evacuation machines to evacuate the cautery smoke? Our hospital is going towards that direction, but I would like to accelerate that process. I just need some more support for how to do this. What worked for your facility? What did not work for you? Canada mandates the use of smoke evacuation machines, why can't the US?

Thanks Rose_Queen. According to the AORN, "burning 1 gram of tissue releases the same level of mutagenic toxins as smoking 3-6 cigarettes." (AORN 2013) 3 cigarettes for laser plume, 6 cigarettes for cautery plume.
