  1. Yes your research does sound very interesting. I see a TCM doctor, glad to see an open minded soul around here. My doctor laughs at me for this and that makes me not want to see him anymore 😢
  2. Thanks! I start taking my prerequisites in a couple weeks. I've started to collect info on local schools that offer CNA training. I take the HESI exam mid June. I start volunteering at a hospital early July. I am also getting a tax ID # for my design business.
  3. Congrats! That must feel really awesome. Good luck to you!
  4. Yes, as I mentioned, I already have a degree from this school and a 3.9GPA. Design students need math and science credits to graduate, too. And the burnout, as I mentioned, comes from working on commission. Not from the work itself.
  5. Thanks! You see--I'm glad I posted this yesterday. I didn't really think of it that way until someone earlier mentioned the same line of thinking. It makes sense. I spoke with admissions to a CNA program today and she said, among other things, we learn: how to move patients from a wheelchair to a bed, how to take blood pressure, CPR, etc. That probably all comes as second nature to you all--but I haven't a clue! 😳
  6. Well, I can't apply to nursing school until jan 16. Being a CNA actually earns me points on getting accepted into the (competitive) program I'm looking at. I think it's pretty affordable as well. I think it will be good for the experience. I'm not saying I'll work as a CNA (or that I wouldn't), but at this point I'm interested in the training.
  7. Thanks! I am lucky to have the support of my husband. It's all sort of exciting, actually. I spoke with a local private school that offers CNA training in 7 weeks. I'm seriously considering it.
  8. I can't get used to saying HFC and my computer auto-corrects me all the time ;-)
  9. Thanks for responding. I'm so sorry for your loss. Sounds like you're a very strong person. Good luck with finishing your BSN. Oh, and cute black kitty ;-)
  10. I was wondering about being a CNA. Do you see that many nurses start off here? My sister did. Do you know of any places, that you would recommend, in the Detroit area to obtain this certification?
  11. Thanks for taking time to write. I love talking to nurses. I have two clients that were interior designers and now they are nurses; that was inspiring to me. What appeals to me most in working closely with people and caring for patients. And learning, school seems very inspiring! Thanks again :-)
  12. Thanks, this is good input. And I should tell you: I've always thought one needs to have a "calling" of sorts to do this type of work. At 18, 25 and even 30 years of age I think I would have to say I "wasn't cut out" for this type of work. And I'm pretty sure most of the subject matter in school would have bored me to pieces. But I have to say, that after accessing everything and feeling like a I've been through a few things in my lifetime, I have a new found sense of compassion and a sincere interest in healthcare. I should also tell you my sister didn't last very long as a nurse. She never stated employed at the same place for a long time, and she hasn't worked in years. And she is a lot older than me and always thinks of me as being a kid. And her daughter has been a nurse for less than a year. But still, she experience in the field. Do you see a lot of new nurses 40+? Thank you for taking the time to write :-)
  13. Oh I know. And I love a little competition ;-) I'm applying to Henry Ford Community College, Dearborn, MI. Here's the scoop: they just finished converting admission from a waiting list (3 years!), to selecting top two hundred (they use a point system) twice a year. I have a degree from HFCC and a 3.9 GPA. Which is huge points. I also get points for having a bachelors degree, for volunteering, and for scoring high on the HESI test.
  14. I really like this idea. So far I am in the very early stage of my student career. I met with the head of admissions and figured out what I needed to do to apply. Ick, and then there is putting my two weeks notice in at my current job of 12 years. These steps have consumed me and I'm already signed up for my classes. I have to finish my prerequisites by Fall 15 & I won't be able to start the RN program until Fall 16. So, I really really want to volunteer. And I like you idea about the 12 hour shift--and you're right! I have no idea what that going to be like! I really like your idea. I will look into as soon as I am not working. Well, I might take a couple weeks to do some hardcore gardening ;-) Thanks everyone :-)
