Lab requirements for CA license?
I also don't understand how you are supposed to meet the requirement for the communication part : California Code of Regulations Section 1426 identifies the prerequisite courses required in addition to a nursing program: Communication skills, six (6) semester or nine (9) quarter units shall include principals of: Oral communication Written communication Group communication Did anyone have insight on this?

Simmons ABSN Fall 2017
One more thing! Definitely get in touch with admissions and ask to visit Simmons, sit in on a nursing class and speak to some students!

Simmons ABSN Fall 2017
Hi there, I don't know if "Easy" nursing school is a thing or indeed a thing you would want :) Simmons is very rigorous, they take their reputation VERY seriously and they are particularly cautious about producing calibre nurses- for example we are tested on our med calculation every semster and if you don't get a 90 you can't do clinical. So it's definitely not a school for anyone who wants to take it easy! The clinical placements are AWESOME, I think that is probably what, if anything, sets Simmons apart- all of our clinical instructors are really incredible and you get to be in the best facilities, 99% of the time you are in the Longwood Elite. The only negative I can give you about Simmons is that I don't find the administrative end of things are on point- basically be prepeared to figure out a lot of stuff on your own, especially in your first semester. Your best bet will be upperclass women because there will a lot thrown at you that you are just supposed to know. There are always resources: free tutoring etc but you have to figure out where to go and what to do to get the help you need. I don't know if that is just every nursing school because I can only speak to the one I attend, but if you're independent and knwo how to advocate for yourself you will be fine. It drove me crazy in the first term, now I look at it as an important life lesson because as a nurse, you'll do a lot of thinking of the fly, advocating for your patients and learn to fidn resources. The few friends I have in the ABSN program found it very demanding- you basically have to give up everything else for 16 months. I know a few who had families and tried but ended up transferring to the 2 year because it was impossible to keep up. Same with the DE progarm, some of my friends in DE have classes 7-10pm! I was very intested in MGH because I felt they had slightly more global focus and were giving larger scholarships. The only reason I didn't end up going that route is I had to work and just could NOT do accelerated format and Simmons was the only school with a 2 year program. So honestly my choice was more practicality. I'm happy at Simmons but I think you're not going to go wrong with either. So look at things like class size ( Simmons is 40 nax) and clinical ratio size ( we are 1:6) and of course cost! Don't have debt if you can avoid it. I hope that helps!

Simmons ABSN Fall 2017
Hi, Congratulations! I decided against doing an accelerated program and I am doing the 2-year program at Simmons and am super glad I chose not to do the ABSN but of course that means I can't really talk about that program. I decided against MGH but it was only because there was no 2 year option there so it wasn't anything against MGH. I don't think that's very helpful but if you have any particular questions feel free to ask

Amazon Textbook Rentals?
Thanks so much everyone, I really appreciate the info! I definitely do NOT want a bunch of books I never look at again lying around, so I love the idea of rentals

Amazon Textbook Rentals?
Looking for reviews on anyone who has rented text books from amazon? I can't afford to buy this semester, even the used ones are super pricey and this looks like the most affordable option. I'd love to hear from anyone who has used the service Thanks Em

What made you Mama's decide to become nurses?

I have a few college age sitters who are great but not really always available. I have a disabled child so its not easy finding someone who can care for him and most people around casually don't want to take that on. I'm trying to see if any of the para professionals at the local school would want some extra cash on an as need basis so that I can have a few people to call when I am in school and husband is away. Child care is the biggest reason I haven't started a program yet!

My husband travels for work- maybe some of the single mama's can advise ?

Pre-req advice!!
Check if they accept online classes and then look at Portage learning- it's entirely online. My school is very rigorous but accepted POrtage courses with no issue

I'm also the kind of person who thrives on learning and getting good at new skills though, so the fact that nursing hasn't been touchy-feely good times is okay for me because I'm getting fulfilled in other ways. Thanks for this, I also love learning and acquiring new skills so this gives me hope! I keep freaking out that I'll put all this money and worse, TIME away from my kids into it and then be like huh, so that's what thsi job is...and maybe hate it? The thing that is keeping me a little sane is that I know nursing as a whole can be so many things and getting the BSN can be just the first step if you want it to be. So if ( and I'm not saying that I would) but if I end up hating bedside hospital nursing, I can still find another angle to nursing that I would like better? How on earth do people swing the shift work with kids though? Here in MA, most hospitals have two weeks on, two weeks on night shift. If you get a 12 hour night shift you need someome sleeping in your house with your kids! If you get the day shift, how do you deal with the post school stuff? I have zero family anywhere in the US

I hear ya....I think we all wonder if we're scarring them forever. All I can say to that is, I had a working Mom and she was busy a lot and didn't make it to a lot of my "things" but I never doubted that she loved me and that I was super important to her. I can't actually figure out why...that is WHAT she did that made me feel that secure. I haven't started nursing school yet and I have to give in my decision by April and I'm suddenly just wondering if I even want to be a nurse. I know that sounds super ungrateful, I got into a great program and my partner is very supportive. But it just seems nurses are spending a lot more time charting then doing actual patient work and that freaks me out. Thats my rant for tonight. Hang in there Mama's

Simmons BSN 2017
NURS404AdvancedPathophysiology**• NURS295-ACHealthAssessment/Fundamentals(8labhours/weekforthefirst6weeks)• NURS235-ACPharmacology• NURS226-ACMedicalSurgicalNursingI(8clinicalhours/weekforthelast8weeks) So for Fall, you will have probably one FULL day of classes where you'll have pathophysiology and pharmacology. Then for the first 6 weeks you have lab and then the last 8 weeks, instead of lab you'll have the clinical. For me in the 2 year option, I'll have half a day of class and the lab for the while first term. Hope that helps!

So I think that is just a guideline because the actual class timmings vary. here is the link for the 16 month option so you can see your class load is http://www.simmons.edu/~/media/Simmons/Admission-and-Financial-Aid/Undergrad-Admission/Documents/Dix-Nursing-Accelerated-Sequence-080516.ashx?la=en If you go to the simmons current courses and look up the classes on that list for last years schedule, you can get an idea of how many days etc. Of course it may change but I found it helpful. It looks like you will have Patho, pharamcology and nursing fundamentals all in one term. That will be pretty content heavy I'm doing the 2 year option despite having the previous bachelors because I have two small kiddos

Thank you! I was thinking the same thing about white shoes, it's sort of weird they are mandatory so many places given what they are exposed to. I'm going with raspberry because why the heck not :) Will definitely get the name tag! What are these shoes that are so comfortable?! I'd LOVE to know, I have high arches and am an old lady this is my second career!

Hi Mama's! Nice to E meet you! I have two, a 5.5 year old boy and a 2.5 year old girl! I'm 38 and starting this fall too I don't think the guilt ever really goes away but I am thrilled that they both love school! Stressed about post school and how the heck to study the 3 million hours they claim all the 20 somethings do!

Just for fun Style Poll
So after two long years of hard work I've been accepted at my top choice nursing school for Fall! I still have some pre reqs to get done so to motivate myself on my breaks I've been having fun with picking gear. Our school nursing scrubs are navy and we wear white long sleeve T shirt under them. Can wear black, white or brown shoes. We also have to get the Littman Classic 2 stethoscope. What color would you get it in? Choices: black, navy blue, raspberry, orange, ceil blue, pearl pink, peach :)

Congratulations, its great that you have a choice of programs! I totally understand how much cheaper UMASS is and I think thats an mportant factor for sure. I don't know anyone in the 16 month program but I went to an info session on it and they just it is the equivalent of having a full time job so plan on doing something 5 full days a week.

Simmons BSN 2017
I have heard that the 2 year program is the most competitive for the Dix applications because many adults need to continue to work while doing the program. I'm sure it's not anything wrong with the application, just that they get so many people applying. I don't know who Sydney is, I was told Dayna Bradstreet was the counselor for all the Dix scholar applications. Maybe you can just ask how many applications they received and how many they admitted because I'm sure it was just that they had so many applications. I know it must be hard to process reapplying right now.

Simmons BSN 2017
Chancy, I'm so sorry Are you in touch with Dayna the admissions counsellor? They generally encourage you to apply again because it is so ridiculously competitive. Maybe if you email her she can help guide you? I'm so very sorry, it must be devastating. Hugs to you
