  1. why is it so offensive for a group of intelligent people to come together and politely debate a topic? There has been no name calling or insulting and if anything we have learned more about each others profession than expected. I think that is pretty cool. My biggest worry is not who is called what, its how we are unable or unwilling to listen to one another an interact with respect toward someone with differenct views or give someone the opportunity to share themselve before judging.
  2. I am not entirely sure that I agree with that fully. On paper, yes everyone is under supervision but in a medical environment it is completely acceptable for RN to be the only professionals present any time of day. while doctor are off doing rounds, procedures etc. At a Vet clinic, a veterinarian's presence is crucial. For example if I left my dog for the day for a teeth cleaning and I paid $500. The expectation for the average person is the sedation/anesthesia/cleaning is done by the doctor. that is not putting down anyone just a possible perception of the public. Of course realistically thats not possible and even though perfectly capable, would clients be accepting of a vet tech doing all those task with minimal involvement from the Vet; would they feel like they didnt get their money's worth. And for those who had no problem at all, isnt it still the expectation that there must be a Vet literally and physically present at all times. Not on call or absent in any way. Thats a huge difference from RNs
  3. It is really a sensitive topic to discuss, I am finding, But an argument easily won. Its against most state law regardless of what anyone feels. But to be fair, Its my opinion that the vet profession has it really tough. its not just skill and exptertise they require to be successful, its a clear presence of compassion and a connection to the pet/owner. But they are also a business with costs and the need to show profit. That sounds like a nightmare to have to balance all of that
  4. I agree. From the summary report of the NOB its something well known not to do. We have to be careful not to let a tiny portion of the group define the entire group. Like anywhere there are good people and bad people in any professions. Most are good ones that do their jobs and do it well regardless of whatever they are called. But its the few bad ones that get the attention. They might need something for their ego or unsatisfied in something and compensate in false titles or whatever. Maybe that is the true lesson here . To give everyone an example of something to look for when finding a good place for care
  5. we are using the legal definition of the law and the defined responsibilities defined by the states licensing bodies. it is safe to say, it requires a bit more than the Dictionary to debate each side
  6. How about you read the entire thread before accusing anyone of disparaging anyone. the vet techs have been complimented and their skills acknowledged. not one insult made. the only observation is that its common for them to argue that their skills exceed an RN in a variety of areas. The irony is that this small group of individuals are so intent on letting people know how much more diverse and skilled than a nurse they are, but still desire the title. The vet tech should be proud, but regardless of opinion, they have not earned the title nurse, because it was never their's to obtain. The NOB thought it was important enough protect its usage.
  7. I am actually in Medical Devices right now, but I have had a long history experience within the healthcare profession starting all the way back to 1991 as a medic in the military where several RNs became lifelong friends. I wish i could share more but I do have an open case with Veterianry Board and I want to be sensitive to the Vet professions. Currently they encounter a lot of internets attacks and i am not interested in that.
  8. you are very kind. I didnt want to come across as bashing a profession. but the taking of ones title to validate another's ability, who are perfectly qualified and dont need validation turned out to something i woudl have never imagined. Talki about opening the proverbial "can of worm"
  9. i am sorry, but i would have to severely disagree. CNA and an RN? Absolutely would you know the difference.
  10. Sorry, no. I dont know what going on with my browser:)
  11. let me clairfy, they are capable but legally not allowed to vaccinate in my state
  12. And i bet you were good at your job, intelligent, and compassionate. You are probably responsible for saving countless lives for many pets. Just based upone my observation, i truly believe it was the doctor who felt the word Tech was somehow deficient, or even made them feel deficient of the title.
  13. Medicating...I hope not (unless under DIRECT supervision of a DVM). Vaccinating, I hope not under any circumestance. Caring and nursing back to health yes. I guess what is significant is regardless of what anyone feels or thinks, a vet cannot identify his staff as nurses because its the law.
  14. Well said. We are all proud of our expertise, we should be. but I have a feeling it was the doctor more than the vet techs who felt the title "technician" wasnt good enough.
