DUI and Entering Nursing School
again, i wouldnt be saying that to her. i simply told the story for you, the viewers, to have an idea of what happened. i would be taking full responsibility for my actions and i still do to this day. im not trying to downplay the seriousness of a dui in anyway shape or form. i was however left with a bitter taste in my mouth and realized how much power an officer can ruin someone's life just to meet a quota with poor judgement. outside of this, i will make sure this is brought to her attention or to whomever it may concern so they may discuss this with me if they wish to do so. i am fully aware of what needs to be said. in fact i have a draft ready, and will be sending it later today.

DUI and Entering Nursing School
I did take ownership for my screw up. I completed the program and the courts requirements, I stopped smoking weed altogether and been clean for awhile now, and I got good grades, enough to get into the one of the most competitive programs in the area. This DUI happened almost 4 years ago. I rarely drink, if I do it's for celebratory reasons and knowing that I am not driving home. I don't like alcohol personally. I just don't want to be labeled and not given a chance because of a prior mistake whether I was guilty or not. I'm giving readers such as yourself the whole story behind my DUI case, and if that's ridiculous to you then you could have just skipped reading it and went straight to the TL;DR instead of putting down my side of the story as if it doesn't matter. It's easy to criticize behind a computer screen and not knowing all the facts. A lot of people are wrongfully arrested and put behind bars and that is something people should be aware of. Because it can happen to you, even if you are a law abiding citizen, one day which I hope it doesn't happen, you can find yourself in court defending your case whether it be DUI, Divorce, Child Custody or something else. Listening to both sides of a story is important for perspectives and building good judgement. Not everything is so black and white. However, I will take your advice of being forward and upfront so thank you for mentioning that. God bless.

DUI and Entering Nursing School
Hey all. Preface story of the DUI arrest. You may skip the following if you wish, or read it if you'd like an idea of what happened behind the DUI which in my opinion was completely unfair and unnecessary. Having said that, I learned a great deal about the justice system and DUIs in general through the experience anyway. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Story In December of 2014 I was arrested and pleaded guilty for a DUI in New York - Westchester. Unfortunately it was an unjust arrest. I was not drunk nor did I drink at all that night, and also was not high at the time. I blew a 0.00 on the breathalyzer test. I was pulled over during a checkpoint on the highway. My car smelled like weed because I used to smoke back then. I did smoke around 10pm, a joint between three people and myself. My tolerance at the time was extremely high and if you ever smoked weed and had a high tolerance you would know how a joint is basically nothing after 20 minutes. I was driving a friend home back to his Aunt's house in Yonkers. I tried convincing him to sleep over my house because it was at least a 30 minute commute just going there and it was already 2AM and I had work the next day. He said his Aunt was expecting him back so I figured what the hell might as well just get it over with and get him home. So we're getting off the highway, and that's where the checkpoint happened to be. The officer who was conducting the checkpoint smelled the weed odor from my car and asked me to pull over. Some dialogue was exchanged and he asked me to step out of the car to do a field sobriety test. Now keep this in mind. I drive with glasses, and it is stated on my driver's license that I do. I am also wearing an extremely thin layered long sleeve shirt (white tees are thicker than this shirt i was wearing) in sub 30 degree temperature with nothing but jeans and suede shoes on. He asked me to take my glasses off before doing the field sobriety test. I do as I'm told and take them off. After doing the test he directs me to wait by his cruiser. So I'm sitting on top of the hood, shivering, and I overhear his supervisor and him talking. The supervisor says to the officer who conducted my field test "it's up to you if you want to bring him in." He comes over to me, tells me to put my hands behind my back, cuffs me, puts me in the cruiser and I'm on my way to the Police Station. The entire ride there, I kept asking what part of the field sobriety test did I fail because to my knowledge I did everything they asked without error. All he had to say with an annoyed voice was, "keep your mouth shut, be a good boy, and you'll be home by the end of the night." They gave my friend a ride the rest of the way to his Aunt's. Fast forward to my court dates. I call up lawyers, my sister's friends who are lawyers, and they all said they can fight the case but they were all charging at least $3,000-$5,000. I was not working full time and did not have enough money to afford one. My parents were extremely disappointed in me, and wouldn't loan me the money either. I've spoken to other people who had REAL DUIs, and they all told me with their lawyers they basically got the same sentencing as I did. Except they paid several thousand dollars. So naive me went with a public defender. They dropped my charge from a felony dui to a misdemeanor DUI - Operating Vehicle under influence of drugs / alcohol. They sentenced me to a 1 year conditional discharge and 90 days driver suspension along with the required Drug & Alcohol counseling program. I completed everything and it's in my past but obviously still on my record. I really ****** up by not taking this case to trial. My public defender kept telling me if I tried taking it to trial and lost, I risk going to jail and my plea bargain will be retracted. At the time I was so stressed out I just wanted everything to be over with so I ended up taking the plea bargain. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So I've just been accepted into my school's Nursing Program. I remember them saying if someone had a prior or on-going DUI case, they might want to pull anyone with it aside to discuss what happened. Same goes for anything else that pops up on a background check that they would want further explanation. Immediate disqualifications are those with felonies, especially if they are violent which I do not have. I paid for my background check to be done, and it shows up when I go to view it. It's been about a week since I had my background check done and they haven't called me and I've been in touch through email with the head coordinator/assistant of the program. I think I might email her to ask her if there's any questions or things she would like to discuss about me before moving on. She knows me very well because she's helped me in the past with advisement and other personal things (health problems with my Dad ended up me withdrawing my application the first time). She even told me she put my name out there when the Nursing Department was selecting students to be accepted. I owe her at the very least honesty and transparency. I also want to make sure this won't stop me from beginning the program. I am right now in the middle of getting all my medical documentation together as well as my BCLS certification which needs to be completed by February 19th. I've stopped smoking weed for awhile now and have been clean for a long time. I never drink and drive. Even before the arrest and DUI case. And after going through that entire drug and alcohol program, I'm even more afraid to drink when I know I'll be driving. I had a lot of ***** ups when I was younger but I have learned a great deal from my experiences and matured through them. Do you think I should email her asking if there's anything she wishes to discuss regarding my background check? Or should I let them contact me if they have any concerns or issues? Should I send out a subtle email to make sure everything is okay? I can email her saying that I've scheduled my BCLS course and something like I'm excited to start the program and if there's anything else she'd like let me be aware of please feel free to ask or something sounding similar to that. What do you think? TL;DR: Misdemeanor - DUI shows up on background check. Got accepted into the Nursing Program. Not sure if I should email one of the head coordinators, who knows me fairly well, asking if she wishes to speak anything about it with me in person? If so, how should I bring it up in email? Do you think it will backfire on me? Should I just leave it be, and if they have any concerns they'll most likely contact me because that's what they said during orientation. I have to complete my medical documentation (Physical and Immunization records), BCLS certification, drug test by February 19th. I'd like to continue getting everything done knowing that my DUI charge won't stop me from beginning the program. Has it stopped anyone that you know from entering/starting a Nursing School program? Off-topic question: Could I bring my DUI case back into court if I wanted to fight it again after pleading guilty (read pre-face story for details of DUI)? Obviously this is assuming you are not a lawyer or attorney, but if you have any knowledge on this you'd like to shed some light on?

Laguardia RN Spring 2018
Anyone know the competition for this candidacy for RN Spring 2018? I got A- in A&P1, Psych 1, Eng 1, and a combo average of B- + C- in Chem 1. Scored a 78 on my TEAS. Took A&P2 in a 6 week and got a B+. Think I have a decent shot?

No. It's for you to pick up your acceptance/rejection letter. That letter you pick up on Jan 16th will tell you if you got in. If you don't mind me asking, what were your grades for the four key courses and TEAS score?

Okay thanks for clarifying that for me. I think I might have to retake Chemistry because I received a C-. Tomorrow I'll find out for sure. Wish me luck!

Lehman College CUNY BX
I should note here are some classes I've already taken: A&P I A- A&P II B Eng 101 A- Statistics 101 A- Psych 101 A- Microbiology (will have to retake) C+ Chemistry (will have to retake) C- and some other non-related nursing classes.

yes just to the school itself. im going to take the remaining prereqs there at Lehman if I get accepted as a transfer student. My cumulative gpa isn't great (2.5 with 28 credits). I have to retake Microbiology and Chemistry because I didn't study hard enough and got Cs in both of them. How does Lehman evaluate transfer credits and retaking classes? Will it replace the grade with the highest, or average the two together? Or will they just not accept them as transfer classes and allow me to take it at their school?

Hey I have an appointment with the school tomorrow for direct admission. I go to another CUNY, Laguardia CC, and was wondering if the transcript ordering between two CUNY schools is fast? I ordered it on the 5th of July. Part of the required documents are my transcripts. Also, because CUNY doesn't give official transcripts physically to students, I had to send it to Lehman's Office of Admissions. So I won't have them personally on hand, but is it usual for schools to get in contact with their admissions department to pull it up when I have my appointment?

Concordia College Bronxville NY Nursing program
Hi I'm not trying to revive a 2 year old thread but I do have a few questions. I'm interested in applying here but I don't know my chances of getting in. I have a 2.5 cumulative gpa but a 3.8 in the sciences. All nursing entry tests such as HESI and the TEAs have been a breeze. I messed up my first year of college and that resulted in my cumulative gpa being low. My options right now is to boost my gpa so I can meet the minimum in order to apply to most nursing colleges (Molloy / Adelphi / LIU-Brooklyn etc). I've been working (not volunteering) at a hospital for 6 years now, so I have hospital experience. I'm just really in a weird predicament and would love some guidance. Feel free to reply here or pm me. Thank you

BSN Program CUNY/SUNY/Private
Hey all! I'm currently looking for a BSN program in the NYC, Long Island/Surrounding area. I have a car for commuting, but don't mind taking the train into the City. My main goal is to come out with the lowest amount of debt as possible. 1) Where did you go for your BSN, and in summary what was your experience like there? 2) What was your estimated total student loan once you graduated? 3) Would you recommend me to apply there based on my stats below? If not, is there something else you would personally suggest? Any constructive feedback is appreciated. STATS/background Male, 24 years old, living with the parents in Queens, so expenses are minimal. Single, with no kids. My location is a blessing. I'm right by the border of Queens/Long Island, but I can get to the city in less than 20 minutes if I had to because the Long Island Rail Road is down the block from my home. I also live near the 7 train, or have the option of driving. Part-time weekend hospital employee for the past 6 years. I've worked in all units at my job from ER, to ICU, to a DETOX/Psych Ward, Med/surge, Geriatrics & Hospice, Labor & Delivery, Pediatrics a few times, NICU, PACU, and Telemetry as a Ward Clerk involved with indirect patient care for the most part. Because I work the weekends where it's slow, plus evening shift, I can usually get some study done during downtime. I'm also able to pick up shifts during the week usually. I make decent money to get by but I'm looking to advance. I would be taking out a loan to help pay for school School Stats: Currently a student at Laguardia CC. Cumulative GPA is 2.5 28 credits Anatomy and Physiology A- Anatomy and Physiology II B (took this during a 6 week semester. Boy was that interesting) English 101 A- General Psychology A- Statistics A- General Microbiology C+ (I messed up in the Lab section which was like 40% of our grade. I like the subject overall, but in lab I had no idea what I was doing especially for the unknown I had to do which was 80% of that 40%. I was pulling high 80s / low 90s for the lecture exams though.) General Chemistry C- (Chemistry is not my strongest. My study habits were s**t for this class. Would prefer a BSN Program that doesn't involve a lot of chemistry courses if any at all. If it does I'll prevail and push myself to study harder next time.) I've taken both the HESI and TEAS V. I consider them pretty standard test. Relatively easy considering I didn't study for them at all and pulled pretty high scores. Although taking Anatomy prior to taking them definitely helped. I have some credits in a few other classes but they're not worth mentioning since they don't really apply to Nursing / Science fields. I took developmental psychology but had to withdraw the class via approved medical leave of absence but I would have received an A- in it. And I know dev. psych is a common pre-req for Nursing. Just thought I'd mention that. I'm planning to retake it during the summer semester along with another class.

2 year private nursing programs in NYC
I'm trying to get into a Nursing program asap. I'm 24 and just want to start a Nursing program already. I was accepted to St. Paul's but ultimately due to my own fault I have to look elsewhere. I took the main nursing pre-reqs (Anatomy & Physiology, English, Psychology, Statistics, Microbiology) and managed a ~3.7 in them. I've taken the HESI and TEAS V and did pretty well considering I didn't study for them. I am still currently a student at Laguardia. I tried applying there but got a C- in Chemistry which basically ruled me out of candidacy. Don't know what would happen if I retook Chemistry and got an A because they average the two grades instead of replacing. And CUNYs are notoriously competitive where students with 3.7s sometimes don't even get in depending on the semester. I guess long story short, I'm looking for a nursing program that offers an ADN in the NYC / Long Island area. Can be private or CUNY/SUNY. Also considering a 4 year school since eventually I would have to get my BSN, but my original goal was to do ADN->RN, then RN-BSN bridge while working at a hospital I've been working at for a few years now.

2 year private nursing programs in NYC
Anyone know of any 2 year private nursing schools in NYC or surrounding area such as Saint Paul's School of Nursing? I'm trying to go private for my nursing program. I have taken BOTH TEAS V and HESI and scored pretty well without studying for them, so I know what to expect for entrance exams. I am a 24 year old male pre-nursing student that took most of the usual nursing pre-reqs.

A little lost and stuck...
Was wondering what my options are. Recently I applied for St. Paul's School of Nursing (queens campus) and got accepted into their program, but long story short (please spare me the lecture, I've already learned and trying to move forward from it) I was ultimately rejected due to failing a drug test for testing positive for marijuana. Previously I was a Laguardia CC student (technically still enrolled), where I did most of my pre reqs (A&P 1 + 2, Eng 101, Psych 101, statistics) and got an A- in all of them except microbiology and chemistry (C+ and C- respectively). I couldn't get into Laguardia's program because of that C- in Chemistry. I'd be willing to retake it but it would be my third time at Laguardia, the first one I had to withdraw via medical leave of absence. Right now I'm just kind of lost on where I should be looking to go to next. I had everything setup, I was ready for St Paul's and to sacrifice everything for it in order to be successful. But unfortunately due to my own piss poor judgement and decision, marijuana stays in your system far longer than when you initially use it. Ideally I want to get my associate's first, because my plan is to obtain my RN and work for the hospital I've been working at now for 5 years and then get my BSN through an RN-BSN bridge program. So far I'm looking at BMCC, someone here mentioned Swedish Institute of Health Sciences, or maybe perhaps even try for Laguardia again if I can retake Chemistry in the summer session and nail down an A. Although my chances are still pretty bleek because of the natural competitiveness of cuny nursing programs. I cannot go to QCC because I was academically dismissed from there when I first started college and did not know what I wanted to do in life. Any suggestions members of allnurses? I'm going to my school tomorrow to see what my options are with Laguardia or if it's even worth it to continue there. Worst comes to worse if I don't think of anything, I'll probably end up applying to a 4 year university but I would prefer to go the ADN->BSN route.

St. Paul's School of Nursing 2017
Hey guys. Unfortunately I have to look elsewhere because I tested positive on their drug test from smoking a joint awhile back in February (stupid I know, but please spare me the lecture). It was a moment of lapse of judgement and I made a mistake. It sucks, and I'm feeling bummed out about it but I will move forward. So a seat will open up for sure in their Queens campus. Now I'm just stuck on what to do, and weighing my options. I'm not sure if I should just go straight for a four year with CUNY York or something alike, or try and find another 2 year private school. I'm open for suggestions. I have most pre-reqs done averaging a ~3.5 gpa.
