Psych NP questions
Thanks for the response. I also like the idea of treating physical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, etc. Can a pmhnp prescibe and treat other illnesses? Or should I go for FNP and obtain a pysch certificate? Can a FNP work in pysch without a pysch certificate?

Psych NP questions
Hello all, I am currently a male student with a 3.7 GPA and I am applying for my school's nursing program. I have a strong interest in psychology and the idea of medicine and therapy. I have looked into becoming a psych NP, I heard shadowing is difficult due to privacy, so if a psych NP or even a psych RN could comment on what their typical day is like that would be great! Are you satisfied with your job, any regrets? I have also considered PA, MD, PT, OT school as well. I am pretty undecided. thanks!

So Undecided
Thanks for the reply! I really do appreciate someone taking the time to help me out. If you dont mind me asking, what specialty do you work in and what pay can one expect to make in that area. I am leaning towards the FNP track so I can work in a broad spectrum of specialties.

So Undecided
Hello all, Just a little background about me I'm currently a sophomore male student with a 3.7 GPA and I'm applying to my school's nursing program in about a month. I definitely want to pursue a career in healthcare because I have had 2 ACL surgeries and also had complications after my surgery and loved the caring nature of healthcare professionals. I just don't know what career I would enjoy. I am currently planning to major in nursing for now and kind of go with the flow, whether I become a NP, PA, MD, etc. I am a very caring person and tend to empathize with others very well, I have been a lifeguard, taught children's swim lessons, member of the medical career society at my school, shadowed a nurse practitioner and physical therapist, but I still can't seem to make up my mind. I have considered being a NP, PA, MD, Dentist, PT, OT I ultimately want a career that pays well and not extremely stressful. I like the idea of holistic treatment. I believe I can handle medical school, but I am not sure if I want to dedicate that much amount of my life stress, and money to study for a job. I have considered joining the military through HPSP, does anyone know how competitive these scholarships are? Sorry for the long post, but in short, from experience from Advanced Practice nurses, do you think it is worth going the medical school? What careers do you think are best in the healthcare field? Do you have any regrets? Also can NP's easily work in different specialties? I have looked heavily into psych NP ( I love psychology)

Questions about being a NP
Hi nurses! I am currently a 19 year old male, Sophomore student at Salisbury University in Maryland. I have a 3.75 GPA and plan on applying to the nursing program after this semester and I had a few questions about being a nurse practitioner and nursing in general. I am attracted to health care but I am still trying to decide what I want to do. I have thought about NP, PA, PT, CRNA, and even MD and dentist. I have shadowed a nurse practitioner in my hometown and really liked what I saw. I like how nurse practitioners can treat patients and earn a great living without the enormous amount of stress and debt from med school ( I have a little bit of anxiety and I don't know if I would hold up in medical school. ) I have also shadowed a physical therapist and found it interesting, but I like the idea of being able to treat illnesses with medicine. I have had two ACL surgeries and I think this is what really drew me to healthcare, I really love psychology and have thought about psych nursing and becoming a psych NP as well. Overall, I want to be happy while making a comfortable salary. I know many people say it is not important to love your job and that it is just a way to get by in life and pay bills. But I think if you hate your job it will negatively impact your personal life as well. Anyways here are a few questions I had 1. Are NP's treated with respect by doctors and patients? 2. Do you ever have regrets about becoming a NP? 3. Do pysch NP's do therapy along with prescribing medicine? ( I don't want to just write scripts for someone addicted to a psychotherapy drug) 4. Do I have an advantage being a male entering nursing or NP in general? 5. Would you recommend being a CRNA? ( The money looks great) 6. Do you ever get upset that you do the same work as a doc, but are not paid as much? 7. Is it possible to go right into psych nursing or even orthopedic nursing after I graduate from undergrad? ( I heard all new grads have to do med-surg and I do not picture myself liking that very much) 8.Lastly, do you enjoy your lifestyle out of work? Do you feel like you have enough time and money to go on vacations, do hobbies, spend time with family and friends?

Undecided male nursing student
I'm sorry I didnt mean to offend any nurses. My mom is a OB/GYN nurse and I have great respect for nurses and their profession. I simply meant that I think I have the capability to do other things as well ( I have an interest in basically every healthcare job and cant make up my mind) Nursing appeals to me due to the great pay, flexibility, and opportunities to advance in education. I am just not sure if I want to be a CRNA, NP, PA, MD, Dentist, PT or OT. The problem for me is that they all sound great with pros and cons and I can't make up my mind. Time is running short because I have to declare my major next year and I'm currently doing the nursing route. I'm thinking I should do nursing and see how it goes. I know if i took physics and organic chem at a CC I would have all the classes needed for OT, PT, MD, Dental school. I would have a great job as a nurse if too I stick with it, compared to not having a job if I major in Bio.

Undecided male nursing student
Hey guys, I am currently a Sophomore in college and I am on the nursing track. I have a 3.75 GPA and I have to apply to the nursing program at the end of this semester. My main goal was to become a nurse practitioner, nurse anesthetist, or even a PA. I am however very undecided if I want to go into nursing. I feel like I am going crazy trying to decide what I want to do. I have heard so many horror stories about nursing and it has sent me bad vibes about the profession. My worst fear is going to a job that I hate and am disrespected. Going to Med school, Dental school and even PT or OT school has crossed my mind too. I am thinking about majoring in biology and minoring in psychology to keep all my doors open. I don't want to cut myself short and go for nursing when I think I am capable of becoming a doctor. However, the time commitment and money scares me too about medical school. I am also in the Honors program, a fraternity, and a member of the Medical careers society. I have talked to many advisors and counselors and they all tell me to shadow and find what I like the best. I was wondering if you guys think doing nursing is a good option for me. I also love traveling and want to study abroad while I'm young.
