3-11 in LTC
Most of the nursing homes I have worked in have been about the same nurse/resident ratio that you stated. It is difficult at times when the unexpected happens. Change is also difficult at times. Keep a positve attitude. This will help you and your coworkers. I wish you the best.

moving to day shift---HELP
Thanks for everyones reply. This was my first weekend on days, and it did go well. Very busy, it made the 12 hours go by quickly. Baylor at where I am working is 12 hours Saturday and Sunday and you are paid 36 hours or you can choose to get paid for only the 24 hours you work and get your health/dental insurance instead. I chose the pay for 36 hours because my husband has good insurance with his job. As far as my husband not wanting to hear about my work, I think it has to do with him not understanding what we nurses do. On the other hand I don't like to hear about his business life, I find it dull and boring. So it is a mutual decision between us not to talk about our careers.

moving to day shift---HELP
For over 19 years I have worked 11-7 or 7p-7a with some 3-11's but never DAY shift 7am to 7 pm. I am so nervous. Over the years I have worked in hospitals and nursing homes so I am use to each, just not on day shift. I hope I adjust. I know things are done so differently on days or I think I know that they are. I'll be starting baylor weekends in a nursing home this saturday. Any advise is welcomed. I just hope I am overly anxious for no reason. Just needed to vent about my nervousness, the husband doesn't like to hear about my work, thanks.

Health Insurance And Nursing????
Is it me and where I work in TN or is it the topic of health benifits for nurses from their employer a thing of the past?? The past several LTC's and DR. offices I have worked at DO NOT offer insurance for employees unless you want to pay $500 and up per month. And this is not a family plan, this is for employee only. Some of the hospitals offer health insurance but even then it may be only 1/2 of the premium paid for by the employer. Most of my former co-workers and nurse friends do not have any type of insurance coverage. I believe this to be horriable, especially since we are the ones in the health care profession taking care of others. Any one else having this problem in the state or city your working in?

LTC patient to nurse ratio
I would say you all have it good. I work in south west TN and on 11-7 shift I have 72 residents and 3 cna's on a good night. On a typical night it is me and 2 cna's. My salary is $13.85/hr which includes .50 shift diff. All of this with 18 yrs of nursing experience under my belt. Since joining ALLNURSES.COM I believe I need to rethink where I work and where I live. Thanks every one for letting me vent, last night was a bad night. One cna and me which included a fall, a death and shipping one out to the hospital. We got through the shift, and was I glad to see 7 am. thanks again.
