Hey guys! One other thing: the new program of study number is 2330.

The curriculum has changed as of this coming semester. There are no longer four classes per term. There are two, each of which lasts eight weeks--so, class one is the first eight weeks, class two is the second eight weeks. And the quiz is actually on the day of orientation, which for our class, is on August 6th. Once we, (c/o December '16), know more, we'll be back to share...promise!!

Chemistry isn't part of the FSCJ HESI entrance exam.

I got in!!! 193.5! YES!!!!

Hey, guys! First, obligatory comment about this wait HERE. Honestly, though, it's my understanding that the reason the deadlines were changed in the first place was to allow more time for application processing. If I'm not mistaken apps weren't due this early in the past, which made for a shorter turn around time in the nursing office and, apparently, came to be burdensome given that the program itself is also continuing on along at the same time. Sooo...I'm giving myself until May 15th (week 6) before I begin stalking my older, itty bitty mail lady; given that my mailbox it right next to my front door, I'm certain it won't take long before she just starts tossing my mail into the yard! Now, the real reason for my post: I know a couple of people have mentioned taking Micro this summer, and I'm curious if anyone is doing so at Deerwood. I have class on Wednesdays @ 2:30 w/ Norman. It's a hybrid course with a lot of Mastering work online, including two out of the four exams for the semester. First day is the 6th, and I was hoping to maybe put a face or two with some names!

Thanks and apologies to those who endured my panicked ranting on Wednesday. Things did manage to work themselves out, and my application for Fall 2015 WAS submitted in time. Total points 193.5. I'm taking Micro during the first Summer session, so at least I'll have something else to focus on while enduring the LONGEST. WAIT. EVER. Again, thanks for putting up with my venting and for talking me down from the crazy ledge!

Had the original Chemistry class I was enrolled in not been cancelled, this would be a non-issue. It was one of the A8 (A6?) classes, which would have ended at the beginning of March. As it was, by the time it cancelled all of the A12 courses were closed, and it took the selfless effort of the math and sciences program administrator to get me into one; the only other option they were offering was a class that didn't even BEGIN until March! Trust me, poor planning on my part was not the issue--and trust me, as a reformed procrastinator I can honestly admit that's one of the few times in my life I can state that with absolute certainty.

Yeah. You're absolutely right. Especially when you consider that these deadlines are part of the program changes that JUST went into effect, logic dictates that there would be some type of self-evaluation built in. The possibility that the quality of the program could suffer is too great for that not to be. I mean, it could result in a drop in the number of applications for this term, which could, consequently lower the points cutoff for admission, in order to fill all the slots. Subsequently, when the application window for the next term opens up, a higher level of competition for those same slots will have been created. Know what I mean? I'm definitely curious to see how it plays out. Anyway....GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE WHO IS APPLYING! My birthday is May 25th and an acceptance letter sure would make a GREAT gift!!! Kristin

My Chemistry class was supposed to be that condensed term, as well, but it was cancelled because they couldn't find anyone to teach it. What I meant about getting an envelope postmarked was doing so in preparation of a grade being submitted today, for example, but not showing on the unofficial transcript until after the nursing office had closed. You certainly wouldn't do so if there's no proof of grade or buy-in from your professor already. Lucky for me the program coordinator at Deerwood who initially told me about my cancelled class, and then worked her butt off to get me in an A12 Chem class despite it being closed, had already laid all this groundwork for me with the professor. I just wasn't prepared for them to reject all of the documentation from her and my professor supporting that fact, as well as the Blackboard printout from the class showing that all my work had been submitted, graded and that I was finishing the course with 1027 out of a 1000 points, an A. It was the nursing office that told me about the mail-in option and that I had until midnight tonight for this to work itself out.

OH! And remember...you CAN apply if all you owe is Microbiology. You just have to show you are enrolled in it for Summer session. Of course, you're foregoing whatever points you would earn for your grade in that class, but if you have a competitive points total w/o it, go for it! For example, I have a 193.5 without Micro, which I'm comfortable with based on what I've seen as the point cutoffs on the other boards.

FYI, everyone. If you're enrolled in a class this term (Spring A), which officially ends a mere 4 days from now, you're application will not be accepted. So, even though you'll have a grade for the course before anyone even reviews your app, (more than likely), they're making us wait. HOWEVER, there is another way to go about this, which will accommodate the deadline for submissions. First, get on your professor and ask them to submit your grade early, if it's realistic for them to do so; mine agreed to do so at the beginning of the semester so that's definitely an advantage--unfortunately, it's not yet showing on my unofficial transcript. Second, as long as mailed application packets are postmarked with today's date, they will be accepted. So, if you're able to get an envelope postmarked by midnight tonight.... In an earlier post someone mentioned how few applications had been submitted up to that point, which probably reflects the fact that there are several of us in this position of being enrolled in classes this term. Personally, I would expect there to be a slight bit of flexibility built into the process for that eventuality--wherein the program application deadlines align to accommodate term end dates when the difference is a matter of just a few days.

As far as the skeletal system, do you have access to a skeleton and/or a set of bones? Maybe in a science study lab or tutoring center? I found it far easier to learn the axial and appendicular skeleton if I had the actual bones right there in front of me. Also, read the chapter(s) to be covered in your A&P lecture prior to that particular class, and try to have, at least, a passing familiarity with the basic concepts so that when the material is presented during the lecture it's not the first time you're hearing it--I bet that will help cut down on some confusion in class.

Hi, Shirley! That info about Micro is not correct. If you want Micro to be included in your points then, yes, it would need to be completed for a grade prior to application to the program. However, per a telephone conversation and email exchange I had with Cheryl James, you CAN apply to the program without the completed Micro prereq, as long as it is fulfilled BEFORE you begin the program AND as long as it is the ONLY class you would be taking the semester preceding the start of Nursing school. So, for example, the Fall 2015 application deadline is April 1st, with a program start date in August 2015, which means you can submit an application/transcript on April 1st that doesn't include Microbiology, take that course over the Summer, and still qualify. Of course, foregoing Micro in favor of making the 4/1/15 app deadline means giving up the 24 points you have the potential to earn should you get an 'A' in the course, but a competitive score is definitely possible without it if you do well on the HESI.
