Port-a-cath needle removal
I don't know if it's only my unit has this kind of old fashion needle because we are surgical unit and since we don't have a lot of oncology patients, we only have this kind of needle in stock. So if a damaged port will cause hematoma, the patient must complaint of pain and discomfort on the site right?!

Port-a-cath needle removal
Thank for replying me! I meant the tip of the needle there is a little curve, but I do know the needle is supposed to be bent at a 90 degree angle from the top. No the one we are using does not have a safety device cover, just a bare needle. I heard some nurses got their finger stuck when they remove the needle. Something like this: Treatment.htm

Port-a-cath needle removal
How do I tell if there is safety mechanism? The needle was bent slightly when I looked at it. What are the chances that will the port gets dislodged or damaged when I pulled it too hard or not stabilize it enough?

Port-a-cath needle removal
Hi CarryThatWeight. Yes it flushing well and getting a good blood return the day before. My worry is will it get dislodged or damaged when I pulled it too hard or not stabilize it enough? Hi FlyingScot, I don't really know what brand it the port-a-cath since the patient got it 3 months ago when she was in oncology unit. Now she is admitted to my unit due to bilateral pleural effusion but we are surgical unit so not so familiar with types of port-a-cath.

Port-a-cath needle removal
Hi oncology nurses, I have a desperate question and I was worrying the situation so much that I can't sleep. I had difficulty to remove a port-a-cath needle yesterday. The needle eventually came out but I'm not sure why I had difficulty. Now I'm scared maybe because I didn't stabilized the port-a-cath enough, and by pulling too hard I may cause damage or dislodgement to the port-a-cath. So my questions are: 1. What are the chances that the port-a-cath will be damaged or dislodged due to not stabilize it enough when removing the needle or pull the needle too hard? 2. What are the sign on the skin of a damaged or dislodged port-a-cath? I've worked with port-a-cath before and never have difficulty in removing the needle. I'm not an oncology nurse so I was hoping to have some opinions from the experts. I really really appreciate your input

After interview, then what?
I used the power of internet to track down one of the nurse managers who interview me and sent her the thank you note. My anxiety is increasing close to the max as it has been 2 weeks now and I haven't heard anything from them. The nurse manager said the new hiring will start on January 5th so it's about time for them to make decision now since the holidays are coming ....

I want to send thank you notes but I don't have their contacts. It was HR who contacted me for the interview and I don't remember my interviewers' last name to look them up online for contact info

After interview, then what?
No, they didn't ask me to sign anything for the interview. There are 2 parts of the interview, 1st part with nurse manager and educator from ICU then 2nd part with manager and educator from Emerge. I'm thinking those 4 people need to sit together, combine the 2 parts of interview and decide who will be the top candidate, then check the reference? It doesn't make sense that Emerge asked me for reference without knowing how I did with the 1st part. At this point I'm just psyching myself out and pray everyday as I want this job so badly!!!! It's an amazing program where I will be working in 3 different units (ICU, Emerge and Tele). How much longer should I wait before I contact the HR? My interview was Last Monday.

Advice to a 49er fan moving to Montreal
You will have a temporary licence for 4 years, and during these 4 years you have to pass the french exam, which is not easy even for some Quebecois. I would said commute to work in the states and live in Montreal. The pay is in the states and living expense is cheaper in Montreal!

Had an interview, and now what?
They didn't even ask for my reference at this point and it has been a week and a half. is it a bad sign that it's unlikely I will get the offer?
-
Had an interview, and now what?
But the human resources won't know because the interview I had was with the nurse managers and educators. So unless the managers contact the HR, HR won't know anything about the the status of my application

Had an interview, and now what?
I just had an interview with North York General in Toronto last Monday but since then, I haven't heard of anything and they didn't ask for reference list at the end of interview. I'm worried now. Does that means I fail to interview?

Got called for interview from North York General. Any tips for the interview?
Hi Starlane, thank you for your reply! No I haven't had my interview yet but it's coming soon. I have another question for you. In the qualification they stated they prefer to have someone who has certified course on emergency or ICU. I don't have those certified course and I'm worried I have less chance to get hired. Do I have to have those certified course before I got hired? But they are so expensive to take without a job!!!!!

Thank you loriangel14 for the reply. It said preferred qualification to have ACLS and certified course. Does that mean I have to have them?

Do I need to get specialized certification before I get hired?
Hi everyone, I'm just wondering, in Ontario, do I need to get specialized certifications (ICU, Emergency, Coronary care certification) before I apply to jobs? And if I don't have those certificates, what are the chances of me getting a job here? I'm working in Quebec right now and I'm thinking about relocate to Ontario, and I'm desperately needing a job!!!! Thank you so much for your input

Still can't be in step-down, feeling depressed
Hi everyone, I just want to hear what do you guys think about this. I have been working on my unit for a bit over a year (a year and 1 month to be exact). I'm in a cardiac-nuero surgical floor and we have a step down unit. I started with another 3 new nurses, who are now all in step down. And even the one who started half a year later than me are working in there. I'm the only one left who is not trained to go there. The worst thing is that everyone was asking why I haven't came over to stepdown I asked my nurse educator why I still can't be trained there. She gave me some very general critique, such as you need to improve your time management and prioritizing skills. When I asked in what instant, and provide me an example where she feels like I'm lack of time management and prioritizing skill so that I can improve myself, she said I asked her so sudden that she didn't prepare for it. She ensured me that I'm a good nurse and we can talk about it later. Then she never brought up the issue again, nor suggest a meeting. I did a lot of self-reflection on why I still can't go into stepdown, but I don't know where I did wrong here. I haven't heard of complains from other nurses that I'm leaving work to other nurse, missing orders nor making mistakes, and my patients said that I'm good at what I'm doing. I've tried to do everything right and be careful with the detail. I just don't know how I can improve and be good enough to be in stepdown. I feel like no matter what I do, they won't choose me to go in. I feel like a failure in the unit and people are looking down on me. Today I talked to another nurse, she started to work more than half a year later than me, but she is "invited" to stepdown. I feel so depressed. Why I can't go in and I'm working on the unit for a little more than a year? Please guys, please help me to understand and figure out what's wrong with me? or any suggestion? I sincerely appreciate your insight.
