How to deal with litigious patients?
Wolfie, In my opinion,You have done the most important tool in nursing which is listening and observing. Most of the time this patients are asking for help may it be verbal or expressing it in a manner they think we can easily understand.not knowing that they have become a pain for us nurses.and that patient is labelled "litigious patient". I have encountered a patient years ago. I was the 11-7 shift head Nurse and it was my first day of work after a requested days off, upon entering the unit i can hear a loud scream saying "aw,aw,aw" very loud. non stop.it is this patient whom the nurse said had a sudden change in behavior and now has a behavior problem, she said the patient was sexually preoccupied(SOP).Because his always in a wheelchair chassing nurses in the hallway showing off his "thing" on top of it his been cursing really bad saying all kinds of dirty words.to the point of pulling my fellow nurses skirt. He has been referred to a social worker and for psych evaluation.they also gave the patient medication to calm down. This behavior lasted for a week but prior to that this patient is SWEET AND VERY COOPERATIVE.What i did after the nurse gave me the report. I went to check the patient,i checked every gadget that was connected to the patients body. With my surprise, The urethral Catheter was not properly placed and the balloon was inflated at the wrong area,Just imagine the pain that this patient had to go thru. and that explains why the patient had a violent behavioral outburst."following nurses persistently for help."Most of the time i have encountered patients with emotional set back "problems with the Family " and trying to cope up with change in body image.Identity crisis, etc... etc...these patients are often hard to manage. Hope to hear from you again ...nice exchange of thoughts...

How to deal with litigious patients?
Everyone gave a very intelligent advice if i may add first document every incident try to observe how that patient is with family and other health workers. does the patient give other nurses a hard time?Check his background. is the patient educated?Psychologically is the patient fit? What precipitating factor do you think makes the patient act or behave unfavorally, does the patient have a certain medication that might triger a certain behavior.Lastly in whatever situation you might be in may it be good or bad act Professionally and handle everything as a case of "Care". Nurses are always in a case situation.

Thinking about nursing
Hi! I accidentally saw your Thread.Based on my experience,i was automatically placed in the 11-7 shift during my first year of working as a nurse. But it does not follow that all new nurses are given graveyard shift.I guess, it depends on a lot of factors. In fact you can request at what shift you would prefer to work. Do not worry about getting a better sleep, your body will slowly adjust to your time schedule and eventually without doing anything you will achieve a better sleep. Note: stick with your schedule.. Hope i was able to give you a sensible advice....

Katrina a threat for water and airborne diseases
Hello everyone!I greatly sympathize with the victims of Hurricane Katrina and also the relatives of the victims. When i saw the News at CNN i could not believe how the Hurricane destroyed everything. With great saddness, this incident is just a start of a greater problem that the state will have to dealt with..The stagnant dirty water, decaying bodies could easily harbor infectious diseases... In my opinion,Prevention and control plays a very vital role.I guess the Key here is people from other states should work together to rebuild the 3 states that are greatly affected.I know that it is really hard since Water supply and electricity is unavailable..In Asia, this disaster happens every so often hundreds of thousands of people die of drowning getting burried alive, lost of homes and even more die of infectious diseases due to lack of resources or simply because these countries are considered "Third World".We have great resources in our Country "We are considered "1st World".It's a matter of pulling all our resources together...In my opinion, the disaster that we are all experiencing around the globe is due to Global Warming,I hope now we do realize the importance of Saving our Planet by Planting trees and protecting our home "Mother Earth " ..
