My dream is coming true!!!
New grad RN hired to OR a few months ago in a 300+ bed hospital with an OR staff of 100+ with 14 OR rooms + trauma. My orientation is 6 months and follows AORN.org's program which I will become a CNOR nurse in a few months which is beneficial at least to me. I circulate then rotate in each unit for 2 weeks each. I had the option to choose and chose to circulate 1st so I could watch the scrub techs/scrub RNs and see how each surgeon treats them/any certain way to scrub and also to become more familiar with the instruments. I will circ then scrub through general/cysto/gyne/neuro/ortho/def am forgetting other parts. But, I have a choice my last 3 weeks to where I want to be and if I scrub/circ. Good luck on your boards. Try the program Uworld.com and do all the questions, it's layed out like the NCLEX and was extremely helpful to me and my friends, way more than using books. Congrats & GOOD LUCK!!!

Future new grad needs Advice***
Hey yo! I have my ADN & graduated in December '16 and am currently pursuing my BSN. I was hired with no experience in the OR and started one month ago. The trend that the hospital system I work for is changing to is hiring new grad RNs to the OR because it is so different from the floor/other aspects in nursing and there is little evidence that previous experience in other disciplines in nursing leads to a more productive OR RN. This hospital system is the only one in my state that will hire new grads in the OR and including myself, the last 3 RNs had no experience after school. Every other hospital requires one to two years. I was hired without a residency program but do have a 6 month orientation getting paid as a normal RN where I will become certified through AORN.org after a few months. I am scrubbing/circulating in each aspect for 2 weeks at a time and have been thrown into it all which is how it should be. In my nursing union contract it is mandatory that RNs be allowed to be scrub nurses(although we have surg techs) and to also circulate. I cannot be happier. Do some research, and find a hospital that doesn't have a residency program because it is harmful to me to be paid a significantly lower wage because you are a "resident" and will be performing the same interventions I will as a new grad OR staff nurse. I accrue 0.0678 hours in PTO for each hour worked at my hospital. There are also options to buy PTO time if you need it at most facilities. Keep your head up! You will find what you are looking for!!

Recently Dismissed from Program
I am going to be dismissed from my school's program here shortly although I haven't been officially notified. This past semester I have failed two subjects in the first semester of junior year; medsurg & pharm, and have received a D which is not passing in my OB class. I have had a familial conflict which I was travelling cross state once and often more a week to balance my home life and school. I understood the consequences and was unable to drop the classes with an uncompleted mark. I understand my irresponsibility in keeping up with school and am in the position to find another path for my degree. Schools I have emailed will not accept me due to my impending dismissal, and my school will not schedule an appeal for me. Any help will be greatly appreciated and I thank you all in advance for taking the time to read this.
