  1. A good friend who is a PICU nurse referred me to the allnurses community - she says the folks here are incredibly supportive and friendly! I've just registered for my first prerequisite class - Genetics - and will hopefully take A&P I and II later in the summer. I guess I'm just hoping to make some friends and connections, specifically with those who, like me, are male students, single parents, and/or older second career students. It would be great to talk about what to expect in an accelerated program, the benefits/drawbacks of various specialties (peds, family practice, etc), and what the DNP degree is and why it's better than the standard Master's degree. Anyway, great to be here and getting started in this new career! Oh, and if anyone enjoys blog reading I've been documenting my journey to nursing school (and beyond!) on toperfectlaughter.wordpress.com. Have a great day!
  2. Hi everyone, I'm sure many of us are struggling to pay for our education. I'm struggling in my current job to pay my bills and - more importantly - provide for my child. I've got the motivation and the ability to return to school and get my BNS through an accelerated program. I'd really like to be able to continue to leave the world a slighter better place - a lifelong goal - and help others as a nurse. I'm just struggling to get there! Here's my story: http://www.gofundme.com/8ws7bs (I do hope it's ok to post this here.)
  3. Oh wow, for some reason I wasn't getting any e-mails to notify me of responses so I apologize that I haven't been interacting here. Thanks to everyone for the replies. I'm pretty certain I want the accelerated BNS program at UCONN, which is a state school, for two reason - one, think I'd thrive in the high-paced environment of an intensive program, and two, the UCONN program gives you nine additional credits beyond the BNS that count toward the master's program. Eventually, I would like to go back for the Master or DNP program. It's expensive, but in terms of value for money it's a pretty good deal. I'm searching now for scholarships specifically for males and second career students. My female nurse friends tell me that males are much welcome in the field - I hope that's true! :)
  4. Well I'm late to this party but I will be applying for the 2016 CEIN. From what I've been told, there's no point applying if you miss the January deadline. I'm going to finish my pre-reqs over this summer and next fall and be completely ready to submit my app for the Jan '16 deadline. I'm also applying to St.J. and Quinnipiac, but UConn is my first choice - I did my undergrad there!
  5. Hi everyone, First post here. I was referred by a friend who convinced me to apply for accelerated BNS programs in my area. I'm incredibly excited about entering school and this field...but also overwhelmed about how the heck I'm going to afford it. The one year program will cost about $28,000 here for tuition, uniforms, and books. Then I have to consider paying living expenses (rent, food, electricity, car) without being to work at all. I'm hesitant to go the student loan route since I all hear are horror stories about the interest rates and time it takes to pay them off. So, are there resources out there for second-career students? Scholarships, grants, etc.? Thanks!
