Are there any nurses who switched over to nursing from music? I also want to become a pastry chef, but I will never be able to make a living out of it. Isn't it human nature to go the other way if the outcome is unpredictable? I hate it.

If the world did not revolve around money, I would go into music in a second, even without a solid violin background.

OMG I used to play the piano, flute and violin too! Well, at least those are the instruments that I'm somewhat familiar with. Anyways, back to what I was saying. I'm taking the pre-reqs for nursing right now (ADN) and the other half of me really wants to major in music. This is what I have so far and tell me what you guys think: Why I should major in music 1. I love music 2. It would be a dream come true to play with a symphony orchestra full time 3. I guess I'm musically talented (was told numerous times how good I am in piano and flute, how well I play at such an early age) 4. I played the piano by ear since I was little with little music lessons 5. I learn instruments quickly. Learned my brother's clarinet all by myself and I ended up playing it more often than him. I was playing flute at that time with my elementary school band and the instructor loved me and saw great potential in me and gave me private lessons 6. Nothing beats doing what you love for a living 7. I would not mind practicing violin for hours and hours a day 8. I had numerous piano lessons when I was young Why I should not major in music 1. I haven't played the piano since 4th grade in elementary school 2. Haven't played the flute since graduating jr. high but I never grasped the skill of playing it without getting dizzy (I was not blowing air in the appropirate place and never paid anyone to give me appropriate lessons) 3. I knew how to play twinkle little star all by myself on the violin and learned quickly from what I remember, when I was in PRESCHOOL. Now, I don't know anything about playing the violin 4. I've read that a person needs to start at the age of at least 6 or 7 to become physically fit to play the violin and have a successful career at it 5. I'm not sure if I will be good enough in violin to work for an orchestra full time 6. If I mess up even one note during an audition for an orchestra my chance of making it is reduced tremedously 7. I hate the fact that my salary is not determined for the future if I do decide to major in music. Who knows if I'll have to live paycheck to paycheck and worry that I will not have money for next month. What if I can't find anyone to hire me? 8. Pretend I put all those worries above aside and go into music major, what if I never catch up to the people that are in my class who have been playing since they were kids? Do I go back and start all over again to become a nurse? That's it. I won't hate being a nurse, but there will always be that what if? I'll probably take violin lessons once I become a nurse though. I wish I would've learned an instrument from an early age and kept at it. Thanks for reading. BTW I'm 19 years old right now. Not to mention that I told my mom that I want to major in music (half heartedly just to see her reaction) and she was against it. "Play violin for fun, not for a carrer." I understand her though, stable nursing job vs music :roll

Thanks for all the info. I've decided to take an online sociology class instead of going to school once a week for three hrs at night. I think that would help a bit. I've decided to keep my science classes since I did get in and there are people dying be added. Science classes (the ones that I'm taking at least) come with labs so it's the same as taking four classes instead of two in my case. So instead of five classes, I attend seven :zzzzz It's hard to focus on Anatomy because first I don't find it interesting and second the class starts at 7pm and ends at 9:30-45pm ish. Good thing it's only once per week, but that means more material to cover during each class meeting. I went to my chem class yesterday and it was better than anatomy. Much easier and it's not all science since it has math. I took a chem class in high school so right now the topics that were discussed in class seem very familiar. I need to study for an Anatomy quiz, but I don't even want to get started on it. Is it bad that I'm going to be a nursing major and I don't find Anatomy interesting?

Was physiology better than anatomy? I really thought that people who were complaing about anatomy on this forum were making no sense, but after the first day of class I'm feeling nervous. It's not the lecture that's making it hard, it's the lab. I go to lab once a week for three hrs Too much materials to cover and the teacher uhh makes things more coplicated. She's not really clear on some things and she seems to confuse herself sometimes which makes everything more difficult. I thought about dropping and I might just do that so I can take just one science class a semester. This will delay myself from applying to nursing schools by a semester. What should I do? If I go ahead with all 17 units right now (chem and anatomy included) I think I will pull it off with good grades, but on the other hand I don't think I will. I also need to work part time. Everything might be possible, but I feel stressed out right now and wish I can use a break already. But I had pretty early registration at my college and I was only able to get on the waiting list for anatomy and I got it so I guess I was lucky. What is I'm not so lucky next semester? Should I just keep my anatomy class that I have right now? I hate the uncertainties of pre-nursing. You don't know if you will get into the science classes that you need to apply for nursing school since so many students need science classes and you don't even know if you will get into a nursing program due to the loooooong waiting lists. I'm afraid that I might suffer from anxiety :rotfl: Please read and give me advice. I think I was lucky that I got into an anatomy class because there were students who were asking my instructor to be added into the class but were turned away because we were full. Do you guys think that I'm just shocked by the sudden amount of studyings that I have to do after long months of summer break and that is why anatomy seems like a hard class? And does anatomy get better? Do I just have to get used to the fact that I'm learning the human body?

First day of A&P. Will it get better? Please say yes.. I feel discouraged. Not sure if I will be able to handle 17 units this semester. A&P was fast paced and I did not know a single thing, I have a chem class coming up this week etc etc and I'm feeling overwhelmed. Going from not doing anything productive for three months into this is driving me crazy. SIGHHH. There seems to be so many easy ways out of nursing, but what good will an AA degree at a community college do for me? Only the ADN is worth going for and the pre-reqs are definitely not easy. Oh man the joy of starting nursing school in the future... and then the joy of nurse orientation + trying to find your niche at work and so on and on....how many years of experience will it take for a nurse to feel "comfortable" at work? How long will it take for a nurse to finally feel ready?

Hello Micky. I'm sorry that you're feeling down. I randomly opened this thread and it was started by you! (My private msgs?? :chuckle ) I was waiting and waiting for your reply since I'm wondering if I will survive nursing school, but I had no clue that you were dealing with problems at work. I wish I can say something that may help you, but obviously I have not experienced nursing yet so I can't be much of a help. Hope you find your niche soon and I've heard many times that it takes couple of years for a new nuse to feel "comfortable" so don't be too hard on yourself! And don't compare yourself to the success of others because your time will come if you work hard at it :) Anyways, talk to you later.

Nursenora that sounds great. I should also do that when I have enough experience. And it would be grea to just go, work and leave and not get involved in the whole hospital thing. If I become an agency nurse later on will I always be able to work when I need to work? As in will they always have a job for me when I ask for one? And how do a nurse get hired into an angency? Screenings?

This is my second year doing pre-reqs. That's why I'm trying to finish everything within this year I really hope I put in the effort throughout this semester. You know how sometimes you want to slack off and instead of going for the A you go for the B? :chuckle That is very tempting to do when you seriously don't want to type up another page :chuckle I have a week and a couple of days before fall semester starts so I'm going to spend my time to the fullest! Am I taking just those two science classes this fall semester?? NOPE. I'm also taking sociology, eng. composition and speech and then during the spring semester I'm taking the other A&P class along with microbio and three other non science classes. It's the only way in which I will be done with my pre-reqs before the next set of school semesters begin :) But it seems like all of you guys handled it well so I'm hoping that it will be the same for me. I mean as long as I don't slack off I should be fine right?

So I'm guessing that I won't be able to work for an agency after graduation due to my lack of working experience? I thought there were programs where they land jobs for nurses and I thought to myself "Nursing is GOOD!" :rotfl: But I guess that is just too good to be true. I just don't understand why nurses would pay organization or company or whatever they're called to find them jobs. Is it just bcuz they don't want to waste time searching for a job or is there more to it than that? Does it cost a lot to hire a job searcher? I've researched to find out more about agencies and whatnot, but they all required me to sign up with them to find out anything more :uhoh21:

Tell me if this is crazy or not. I never took a science class in college before so this will be my first time, but instead of taking just one, I'm taking two! I'm guessing that science classes are not easy in college and even my counselor told me that taking two at the same time won't be easy! I like science classes though..What do you think? I'm taking intro to chem (I think that's what it's called) and A&P 150 (uh I only know that it's 150..I think it had the word human in the class title..or it may be something else) and then after that I'm taking another A&P class along with micro during spring semester! Hi. I'm not yet a nursing student (RN) so here goes my question. Why does a RN sign up with an agency? Do you just sign up with them and if you're qualified you end up with a job with great pay, benefits, etc? Like, you do not have to do anything but hold onto your license to get a job through the agency? After you get your job, do you still have the need to keep in touch with the agency that you've signed up with? Why do RNs need an agency? So that they can find you your "perfect" job? Do you still have to interview and compete with other RNs to get the job that you want or does the agency automatically land you a job with no work on your behalf? Thank you.

Ok I just talked to a counselor and he thinks I should go for it, even though I told him I don't think it would be for me He talked about how good the job martket is blah blah blah. And when I told him about my business plan, how I don't plan to stay in nursing forever, he said he thinks it's a great backup plan, that he understands my position. I was sort of surprised because I thought he would suggest other careers for me, but then again I told him there's nothing else that interests me. He kept insisting that I should to their nursing program because my grades are good. I saw pictures of his baby daughter in his office and when he stepped out of the room to get something I wondered if he would give this advice to his daughter :uhoh21: But anyways, I've decided to make my own choices and I've decided to go into nursing for now. I have one semester to change my mind to accounting, but I don't think that will be likely. To tell the truth, I LOVE everything about nursing, except giving injections and dealing with unpleasent body fluids, etc I'm actually looking forward to the fast paced world of nursing. I really hope that I will get over the "I'm too precious to deal with bodily fluids" mentality and just deal with it. Like grow up and start being independent you know? :rotfl: No more hiding behind my parents. Nothing definitely comes for free. Helping people is a great thing. Work for what you want. Stop choosing the easy way out :balloons:

I found an article about it. Are you sure you will be able to find a diploma program at a hospital?

I have a question. I just read a forum where people share their career stories, well more like people coming online to vent, and most of them are about nursing! Why is it that people on that forum is so negative about this profession while everyone here are so positive? I know that that forum is made for venting, but you guys like nursing enough that you don't post on those forums. They post things like I would rather go to Iraq than go back to nursing :stone Negative posts everywhere. Very discouraging. Maybe it depends on the area that you work in? I live in S. Cali and isn't this area a pretty nice place for nurses to work? I'm planning on working in Orange County or Los Angeles.

I'm back to nursing, I think. Maybe I'll get a job at a derm. office after graduating. I've thought about that too and sort of forgot about it, but after giving advice about it to someone else it is back on my mind again. I would go into accounting, but what good would it be to get a 2 yr degree from a community college I'm crossing my fingers that I will make it alive out of nursing school. Wait, I'm just hoping that I will get in :) If I may be greedy I hope I love nursing altogether! My head is like in pain right now.

Thanks that really helped and your post almost made me cry You are older than me by five years but I did feel what you were telling me and I'm glad that I heard it from someone who is pretty close to my age and with nursing and school experience. It's too bad that an instructor turned you off from accounting which you seemd to love and I see that you're trying to find what it is that you like doing too and I hope you find it soon too. Right now even the thought of giving injections is making me sick and I'm thinking about going into culinary and see what doors open up for me from there. Maybe a personal chef for some wealthy family? And then opening my own restaurant? But whatever happens I figured I should do what I want to do with my life. Nursing is still in the back of my mind though. Wayyyy in the back. People who replied to my thread kept telling me to go into business, but just because I want to have my own business does not mean I want to work in the corporate world or as business anything It is true that I need a product to own a business and I'm really thinking hard about everything that everyone posted.
