What areas (hospital, SNF, etc) have you applied to? I'm not familiar with the job market your area since I'm in Washington state but I know a handful of new grads here that started out in SNFs and home care. This helped because they at least gained some nursing experience which opened more doors to other positions later on. One of my close friends did pediatric home care nursing for about 6 months and then got hired into an RN residency afterwards. I met one RN resident during my senior practicum that worked in a SNF for a year before she was hired into the RN residency. Relocating is also a possibility if the job market is not as ideal in your area. Hope this helped. Good luck

Hi I'm a new grad and in the middle of my first job hunt. Within the past few weeks I was fortunate enough to interview with three SNFs and one RN residency on a surgical unit. So far, the first two SNFs called my references and are doing background checks. The third SNF I interviewed with today offered me a position and plans on calling me tomorrow afternoon for a decision. I interviewed with the RN residency last week and according to the nurse manager I should get a decision before Christmas. I really want to land the RN resident position it is the main area I am interested in. SNF 1 said they might call me back for a second interview, but I do not know what they will offer me yet (full, part, or on call position). SNF 2 would hire me as an on-call nurse to float between their long-term, rehab, and Alzheimers units. This has potential to turn into a part or full time position if available later on. SNF 3 is willing to offer either a full or part time position in both/either long-term and short stay/rehab units. I am also looking for at least a part time position since on-call is variable based on need and a part or full time position would provide more time and consistency to adjust to the job. There are many possibilities but I'm just wondering how to politely ask SNF 3 for more time to make a decision. I'm in the wait process with the other places but I do not want to burn any bridges too early on. I just feel that it's a bit awkward to try to explain to a potential employer that is providing an offer that I'm looking at other places indicating that I favor those places more. =/ I guess the saying "When it rains, it pours" is true. Each call for an interview all came around the same time.
