NP Program UBC/UVIC
@xaun_88 I have someone I’m using now. Been very helpful. Got through unit 1 in two weeks, she’s basically teaching me the material and I’m doing minimal reading. Shoot me a text, 604-369-1585, or message me on our FB Cohort page ?

@OptNurse At the time of my application I was nursing for 3 and a half years. I have a bit of everything under my belt, including med/surg, Oncology (BMT/Leukemia), mental health, PACU and I took a role in public health in October as a contact tracer to prep for the NP role and buff up my resume. I have a critical care specialty and a previous diploma in business admin. I did have many volunteering experiences BEFORE my undergrad but never took on any leadership roles as an RN but lots of management positions prior. My third year GPA was 88% and my fourth year GPA was 91% and I finished with a 90% GPA for critical care. I do not know how they gauge post specialty GPA with undergrad though but since BCIT and UVIC have an advanced pathway for specialty programs and some of their master's programs, I imagine its taken into high consideration. My advice is to foster some fantastic relationships with managers and educators or even instructors that will endorse a perfect referral for you. Any experience you get under your belt will be beneficial, but highlighting what you've learned vs what your understanding of the NP role is (and expressing that coherently in your statement letter) will be your ticket into the program. Sounds like you have a great background to build off of already though! A great group of budding NP's here!

FYI UVIC admissions reported that this year they had about 155 applications to the NP Program and will be accepting 30 seats. @nicunurseKT From what I understand, only one or two of us that were conditionally accepted into 2021's Cohort had completed the course prior. Many of us are in it now. It's hot garbage and I don't wish it on my worst enemy, but it is extremely applicable, so....#conflicted. In addition to the noted academic requirements for UVIC and what they have touched upon on the website, ensure you have references that will rate you quite strong, so have that conversation with them first before asking them - this should ensure that you're all on the same page. Also, make sure your statement letter is strong; unique to your own experiences, and highlights what makes you standout, and really sell yourself to why would be a good nurse practitioner, what you've done to prepare you for school, and how your own values and experiences will you make you successful in the program. A well-rounded CV wouldn't hurt either. Personally, I sat down with some NP's for about an hour to discuss the role and challenges, so come my interview time, I had already figured out parts of the job I would enjoy, how my previous experiences would align with the NP role, and what I would expect to find as challenging. Feel free to reach out to my directly for any other questions. You have about 6-7 months to prepare and you have a good head start. Cheers!

For UVIC NP’s, I’ll be enrolling in TRU Stats 1201. Let me know if anyone else does the same. Additionally, I’ll be creating a FB page for any UVIC 2021 NP Cohorter who are in this forum. Building a resource army.

@Nayj I only know two people that have taken this program, one was 3 years ago and the other is in it now; they both report an exorbitant amount information and much of it is self-directed learning, which makes me very sad haha. However, from what I understand, UVIC will provide so much preparation for the ONC’s, and as the highest passing rate for them. I think that banding the Vancouver/Lowe mainland residents in the 2021 cohort together to help offset the workload would be essential.

@light1027 Amazing. Thank you for clarifying and easing my mind. I did apply a bit later so it makes sense. Congrats to those who have heard back and for everyone's input and cofnroctuin. What a roller coaster!

I’d email UVIC; especially if you’ve noticed your status has changed on your UVIC application. Paul Meier, Graduate Education Advisor [email protected]

@light1027 thank you for your breakdown for both schools. I may be prematurely assuming the reason for the status change so take that with a grain of salt ?.

For Team UVIC, my colleague who go an interview did NOT have her status changed, and is “still under review.” Taking this evidence into account, I am under the impression that those shortlisted and have seen changes to “recommended by department,” will be receiving acceptance offers.... ***he said more with hopeful wonder and less with factual conviction*** Congrats again to the UBC future NP’s and still wishing all the luck on the world to the UVIC hopefuls.

I know that your references will rate you in addition to their letter, I think you need an “excellent” from all three, meet the GPA retirement and also knock the letter of intent out of the park. Straight A’s are not enough... Keep an eye out for Athabasca opening up their program to BC candidates and for a new TRU program coming down the pipeline. Additionally, from what I heard, COVID has inspired programs to increase seating for next year - bringing promise to unsuccessful candidates.
